East

1. Georgia - They have a Heisman caliber RB in Moreno and a good QB in Stafford.

2. Florida- One word, Tebow. nuff said.

3. South Carolina- This is where it got tricky between SC and Tennessee, but with Tennessee losin Erik Ainge, I went with SC.

4. Tennessee- Lost Ainge but has a good Tailback.

5. Kentucky- They lost Andre Woodson.

6. Vandy- ?

West

1. Alabama- Now dont jump to conclusions because im a Bama fan but the west is a toss up and since BOTH Auburn and LSU lost there QB's and Alabama has the #1 recruiting class along with JPW.

2. LSU- Won the NC last year.

3. Auburn- Lost Brandon Cox.

4. Mississippi State- They beat Alabama and Auburn last year.

5. Arkansas- Lost Mcfadden and Felix Jones.

6. Ole Miss- New Coach.

Let the comments begin.

Well you can't expect one recruiting class to take bama from 6-6 and 4th in the SEC west to first in the west

July 12, 2008  05:39 AM ET

Thats for sure LSU. I do think the west is going to be competitive this year. If Auburn gets the cordinators and their schemes in place quickly and firing on all cylinders I think it will be a toss up between them and LSU for the West title. The next 4 could go in any order though. Alabama keeps getting in the news for all the wrong reasons, Miss St. is a much improved team from Sly Crooms first season, and I think Ole Miss has a ton of talent on the team. Oregeron just was horrible at coaching, but he could recruit his arse off. Nutt can coach though so they may be the surprise team of the SEC this year.

You called the East right, lilpugh22.

But 'Bama in the West? Sorry, no dice. (The fact that you're the 'Biggest Alabama Crimson Tide fan we'll ever meet' is clouding your judgment a little)

Auburn and LSU are the class of the West.

July 12, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Completely agree with your top teams in the SEC east and west. I think UGA loses to bama during the season, but then beats bama in the sec championship game. Alabama will be a lot better than their rivals want to admit this year. No not 1 bigtime recruiting class will change it all, but they will have another year learning Saban's systems and I think the new offensive coordinator will help JPW a lot and having to replace your signal caller is huge in the college game in most instances. I think MSU, Ole Miss, and Arkansas will win a few games they shouldn't and Alabama gets the nod with a win over Auburn to help them win the tie breaker.

July 12, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Dawg fans are coming to the defense of Bama here:
Remember that Saban was a first year coach last season, so a 6-6 season may be a tad excusable. Saban did win the SEC in his second year at LSU in '01. Either LSU or Bama will win the west though b/c Auburn may be one of the juggernauts of the SEC, but Auburn will need some time to get the newly imported spread option offense down, and the D for Auburn may have lapses of ineptitude b/c Muschamp left.

July 12, 2008  11:22 AM ET

I think you guys are selling Auburn a little short. While they do have two new coordinators, Franklin has been installing the spread since December, and with only two weeks it was adequate to score enough points on Clemson's D to win the Chik-FilA bowl. How much better will it be now? Auburn returns their top experienced tailbacks and quarterbacks and will have their entire young and talented O-line back. I think the loss of Cox is a bad thing for Georgia, not Auburn. Defensively they are always stout, and they actually pursued Rhodes some years back before settling on Muschamp. So they probably will have some lapses of ineptitude = aptitude = good thing for them. Just hopefully not in during the Georgia game. While Bama will improve, and LSU will reload, Auburn will win the west.

July 12, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Bama has no chance of winning the west. losing Cox is a good thing. Auburn will win the SEC. WAR EAGLE!

July 12, 2008  01:12 PM ET

i can see where your comin from Yoda, but dont count bama out.

July 13, 2008  04:28 PM ET

It's going to be Vandy and Arkansas. With Vandy winning the SEC Championship and going on to win the BCS Championship with a perfect record over Stanford. The game will be close but Vandy will pull it out. Well..I thought if everyone else was making BS predictions so could I.

July 15, 2008  11:28 AM ET

Put the kool aid down. Make sure that Alabama can beat the University of Louisiana at Monroe before you give them the West. In a year or so maybe, but a #1 recruiting class is not going to do it this year. LSU had a first year starter at quarterback last year, and Auburn beat Alabama when Cox was starting his first time against them. Not to mention that by the time these schools play Alabama late in the season, your quarterbacks have almost a season of game experience under their belt at that point.

July 15, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Ya'll have to remember that all 6 of Alabama's loses last year were by 7 points or less. A play here or a play there and Alabama could've won the West last year if they would've hung on and beat LSU and beat Auburn or Miss. State

And if a frog had wings.........................

July 16, 2008  02:53 AM ET

Bama played there heart out against lsu last year and thats the reason that we ended up losin to miss. st. and monroe because the player just "gave up" after we got beat by lsu. they thought the whole season was over when it wasn't. lakers fan is right, couple of plays here and there, and we would have atleast went to the sec championship game.

July 17, 2008  11:50 AM ET

Now you are talking "ifs". If this play would have went this way, we would have won. You could also say that if Notre Dame would have won all of their games, they would have been in the championship game. There is no excuse for Alabama losing to ULM, just the same when LSU lost to UAB when Saban was the coach. I do not care if they gave up or not, they should have won this on talent alone. If the players did give up it makes me wonder if they are buying in to Saban's program. At LSU he was all about excellence in all that a player does, not just excellence in playing in "meaningful" games. I know that the players were not his players, but as the head coach it is his job to prepare them to play every week, not just recruit new players. I am not saying that Alabama is going to be a push over or bad team, I just do not think that they are there yet as far as winning the West. Of course the great part is, whatever we think means squat because it all gets decided on the field.

July 17, 2008  09:41 PM ET

good point. I see where your coming from. But Saban has another year under his belt and the players who were there last year know what to expect this year. and your right, it doesn't matter what we think cuz its decided on the gridiron.

hey gang, good blog. Bama is going to be good, that is for sure. but i have it LSU and Auburn battling for the sec champion ship on the west side. on the east, i think it is Georgia Dawgs all the way to the championship. know this, this is going to be some exciting football games this season. i think it will be the best we have had. going to be a lot of tough competition every Saturday. i may be a dreamer, but i see the Hogs at 7-5 and with some luck 8-4. we finally have a coach, so i don't think we will be embarrassing the sec anymore. i see Bama in 3rd place, but look out in the future, sorry but Nutt want win any championships, look at the talent he had at Ark. dmac, jones and hallis, plus he ran off the best quarterback we had Mustain. everyone in the stands knows what plays he is going to run. sorry, just my opinion, but good luck to Ole Miss, with nut, he will probably give you some 6=5 and 8-4 wins, but that will be about it. I was glad he resigned and 6 hours later signed on with Ole Miss. good luck to all the teams, lets enjoy a great season of college football at its best this season.
