The Mountain West has been very impressive over the past 5 years, In fact I think that they have a decent argument to be considered a better conference than the Big East.

Break the MW down team by team, and they look extremely impressive.

Last season they had 5 out of 8 different teams with at least 8 wins on the season, that's better  than conferences such as the SEC, Big 12, Pac 10 and Big 10. and all 4 of them have more teams than the mountain west.

You also have to take into consideration that they didn't get these records playing weak schedules, Look at San Diego State's schedule...

  • At Wazz State
  • at Arizona State
  • Portland state
  • Cincinnati
  • at Colorado State
  • at Utah
  • New Mexico
  • Wyoming
  • at UNLV
  • at Air Force
  • TCU
  • BYU

compare this schedule to so called mid major power conference WAC.look at Hawaii's schedule.

  • Northern Colorado
  • at La Tech
  • at UNLV
  • Charleston southern
  • at Idaho
  • Utah State
  • at San Jose State
  • New Mexico State
  • Fresno state
  • at Nevada
  • Boise State
  • Washington
  • Georgia

Hawaii didn't even play a challenging team until week 12 of the season. Yet they seem to be the conference that everybody is impressed with. I guarantee you that there are at least 5 teams in the MW that could make it to the BCS off of that schedule.

Let's compare some more numbers from the WAC and Mountain West.

                                        WAC                   Mountain West

Bowl eligible teams:              3                                 5

BCS top 40 teams:                2                                 4

8 win teams:                        3                                 5

Overall conference record       54-59                          60-53

So if you look at the stats the mountain West is obviously a much better conference than the WAC.
