As a Bears fan, it's tough to say this, but I love Brett Favre. I have enjoyed watching his career, and yes, I'll admit it, have even found myself rooting for the Packers when they are not playing against the Bears. It is always sad to see a great player in his final years, so I was thrilled when Favre was able to have such a great season in what looked to be his final year. I like the guy, so I found myself wanting to believe his teary eye'd press conference was legit.
Now, it just seems like a sham, and I'm very disappointed that a guy that is so connected with a franchise is jerking them around like this. It will be weird to see him play in another uniform, but that is what I hope happens at this point. The world didn't end when Emmit played for the Cardinals, when Montana played for the Chiefs, when Namath played for the Rams, etc. It won't end if/when Favre dons something besides green and gold. But he's put the Pack in a really bad spot here, and it really looks like a no win situation, although things are starting to look like he is going to make it possible for the team to trade him without being the villains of this tale.
I don't begrudge great players for trying to hang on. Especially in football, they give so much of themselves to the game that I think they've earned the right to try to squeeze one more year out of their careers. Yes, most often it is sad to watch a player be a former shell of himself, but it's not like one or two "painful" years will make us forget all of the great things that they've done on the field.
The bad taste in our mouths from this current soap opera will pass, too, and one day it will just be a footnote to Favre's story, but right now, it's frustrating, and I ALMOST feel sorry for Packers fans.
