After year after year of defending the constant soap opera that seems to surround Brett Favre, I have finally reached my boiling point. The combination of both Favre's ego (which at this point, has grown to a size larger then both Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior combined), and the idiotic response of some Packer fans regarding GM Ted Thompson's response to this issue, has officially caused me to burst a vein in my forehead. Here's a few things that are really causing me to form an ulcer;
1) There are people who seriously believe the Packers should fire Ted Thompson. Hopefully, there are many out there, especially among Packer fans, who are seriously baffled at the absolute stupidity of that request. The man who took a depleated team, who had just completed a 4-12 season, and in two years turned them into a team that went 13-3 and came within a Favre interception (OH! The irony!) of playing in the Super Bowl...and people want him FIRED?! I've never felt the urge to say this before, but I think some of my fellow Sconnies should cut all of that cheap, domestic beer from their diets. Please, people; let's think before we open our mouths, okie??
2) The media's coverage of this, simply astounds me sometimes. I've heard the word "mediocre" used to describe the Packers last year...as if Favre was the ONLY reason they went 13-3 last year. Nevermind completely, that the Packers receivers were among the league leaders in Yards After Catch. Nevermind the stellar defense played by guys like Kampman, Harris, Woodson, Hawk, Barnett, etc. Nevermind the superb play-calling by Mike McCarthy. I especially loved Gene Wojoajdaflkjsdfjski's (I'm not even going to give him the courtesy of spelling his name right) take on the situation. I can't remember quite everything that hack said, but I remember it involved something to the effect of the Packers front office personnel being dropped on their heads when they were young. Therein lies my biggest problem with sports media; these people seem to have no ability whatsoever to actually research a single thing they say. Is it stupidity? Or just plain laziness? I'm not really sure. What I do know, is that there are many misconceptions about this whole Favre soap opera, and many of these misconceptions are being perpetrated by the national media.
3) And in other news...perhaps the most distressing thing out of all of this, is that one man, who supposedly was a Wisconsin institution, has managed to overshadow every other feel good story in Wisconsin sports. In case some of you forgot, the Brewers have their best chance in over 25 years to make the post season. Instead of being the seller this season, they ended up landing the biggest free agent in all of baseball, CC Sabathia. Ryan Braun, whose early career numbers compare to hitters like Pujols, and McGwire, just signed an eight year, $45 million contract. Ben Sheets is starting on the mound in the All Star game. Corey Hart beat out players from markets like New York and Philly in the vote for the NL teams final spot. Even the Bucks have done some good things, like acquiring Richard Jefferson from the Nets, and signing Andrew Bogut to an extension. And yet instead of us in Wisconsin being able to absorb all of this great news, we have to be constantly pummeled with news about Favre's latest tantrum. It was almost like he couldn't stand being yesterday's news.
So, on that note, I am going to officlally put all of this behind me. I am going to continue living in the reality I was in before. The Brewers are contending again. Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. Brett Favre is retired, and is right now, mowing his lawn in Mississippi. Like they always say; ignorance is bliss.

I'm sick of Favre too. He is probably the most selfish player in all of professional sports. He needs to stay gone!

Thank-you. Enough tabloid posturing. Packer fans are first and always Packer fans. The reason they are Favre fans is because he is a Packer. The Packer fans will always remember Brett through his great highlights but as fans these highlights belong to them. If he shows up at Lambeau in another uniform, there will be some polite cheers but they will be followed by the same boos targeted at any opponent of the Packers.

crewbacker, I couldn't have said it better myself. Favre alone is not bigger then the 75 years of Packer history that preceded him. Before Favre, there were already the 11 championships, the names on the inside of Lambeau's walls, etc. I just read an article in ESPN that said a pro-Favre rally in Milwaukee only attracted 30 people. That couldn't encourage me more. Packer fans are remembering that Favre is not the only great player to come along in Green Bay. He is merely a footnote to what those before him accomplished. He really is one of the top 5 greatest QBs ever - but he needs to stop acting like he's above this franchise.

First of all, I don't know where my comments should start with this little article. Ted Thompson's job is to put a good team together. Which he did. And they were ONE game from the superbowl with Favre leading the pack. You talk about the receivers having a great year, well who do you think got them the ball??? Like so many QB's have stated before, it takes some time to form a chemistry between WR's and QB's. Brett had that chemistry with all of them. You talk about the irony of Favre throwing that INT...irony? Are you really that ignorant to the fact "he led the Packers to a 14-4 record and, as usual, never missed a game. He completed more passes of at least 25 yards than all but one quarterback. He finished fourth in passing yards and completion percentage. He threw 28 touchdown passes, sixth in the NFL.
Favre gets knocked for throwing too many interceptions, but his interception percentage of 2.8 wasn't bad. For comparison's sake, Peyton Manning's was barely better at 2.7. Drew Brees' was 2.8. Philip Rivers' was 3.3. Carson Palmer's was 3.5 And Tony Romo's was 3.7." (Dan Pompei)
They have a superbowl caliber team. One game away last year. Now listen up, it's ted's JOB to win. The GOAL is to win a superbowl. They had all the ingredients last year with basically the same guys coming back. Now stop being so ignorant and really REALLY tell me: who gives the Packers a better chance of getting to the Super Bowl? One of the best to ever play the game or the young inexperienced one who has never started a game in three seasons in the NFL?
On a further note--we don't even know what kind of QB Rodgers will be. If the Packers stick to Rodgers being their number 1 this season and in the next few years he proves himself to be a mediocre QB at best--then this Packer management will go down in history as making one of the dumbest decisions in the history of the game.
You all forget that Favre changed this organization around when he came to GB. We were a desperate franchise for how long....and then Favre came. He turned the Packers into a playoff/superbowl caliber team for years. He played hurt NUMEROUS times. He played the day after his father died, not wanting to let him team or organization down. He played through so many personal tragedies and gave his all to the city of Green Bay as well as the Packers. He did things for the community for YEARS AND YEARS...raising money for this charity and that charity. He put in years of dedication for his city and team. So why you all can't understand why he would be a little hurt with how he is being treated right now (after 17 years and a HELL of a GREAT previous season) boggles my mind. You are telling the guy that gave his heart and soul and someone who was top 3,4 QB's last year to go away...that's like a slap in the face. But as you say...IGNORANCE IS BLISS.

*sigh* More of the same, tired arguments. First off, I don't think I ever said anything about Favre being less then one of the best in history. So please, stop assuming that. Here we go:
"You talk about the irony of Favre throwing that INT...irony?"
-Yes, irony. The irony (and it kind of gives me a headache that I actually have to explain this to you) is in the fact that Favre, the guy you make out to be some kind of saint, was the one who ended the season for the team TED THOMPSON built for him. I forgot to mention the irony of the fact that Favre almost retired last year because Thompson supposedly didn't build a good enough team for him. Irony just seems to follow Favre like stink follows cow manure.
"Favre gets knocked for throwing too many interceptions, but his interception percentage of 2.8 wasn't bad. "
-I didn't even bring his career interception numbers up at all. So why you chose to bring it up, I have no idea.
"Are you really that ignorant to the fact "he led the Packers to a 14-4 record and, as usual, never missed a game. "
-Yes, and obviously, you missed my point about Mike McCarthy's brilliant game plan, which involved every precaution to keep Favre from throwing so many interceptions. But then again, I don't really ever expect much from some of the people so vehemently defending Favre right now. Yes, he had a great season. But again, how much of that came out of the fact that A) His receivers led the league in YAC and B) McCarthy completely changed Favre's game. How many times did you see Favre throw a short pass over the middle, instead of just heaving it downfield like he was doing the previous two years? Short passes + receivers who could improvise better then any other receiving tandem in the NFL = Favre having a great season. I think even he would admit that he was only part of GB's success last year.
"They have a superbowl caliber team."
-And did Favre have ANYTHING to do with putting this team together. Once again, the reason they are a Super Bowl (two words) contender is because Ted Thompson gave Favre the personnel to succeed. Funny thing is, is that this team's offense is set up perfectly for a first year starter, as well. I'm not saying that Aaron Rodgers is going to win an MVP next year, but he showed in Dallas that he is perfectly capable of leading this team. By the way, how was Favre doing in that game before he went out?
"If the Packers stick to Rodgers being their number 1 this season and in the next few years he proves himself to be a mediocre QB at best--then this Packer management will go down in history as making one of the dumbest decisions in the history of the game."
-And what management group, in the history of pro sports, has not run this risk before? Of course that's a risk, but you know what else is a risk? Constantly counting on Favre to be your starter, when clearly he is in the twilight of his career. The more the Packers wait, the more and more in doubt their future becomes. That is what Ted Thompson wants to avoid.

You all forget that Favre changed this organization around when he came to GB."
-Seriously, am I missing something here? Was Favre actually the GM, coach, and all around everything man for this team the past 17 years? Did he trade himself to Green Bay? Did he personally hire Mike Holmgren? Was Ron Wolf just a figment of our imagination? You act like Favre is the ONLY reason the Packers have had success with him in the lineup. And while I admit he was a big part of it all, don't you think it's just a LITTLE insulting to everyone else who was a part of the Packer renaissance to give all the credit to Favre?
"He played hurt NUMEROUS times. He played the day after his father died, not wanting to let him team or organization down. He played through so many personal tragedies and gave his all to the city of Green Bay as well as the Packers."
-I really don't know what all of this gives to your argument. What exactly gave him the right to attempt to convince his fans to turn against the franchise that gave him a chance to do all of that? Yes, he did so much for this team, and this state - I NEVER denied that. So please, stop lecturing me about all the wonderful, magical things Brett did. Nothing he ever did gave him the right to act like he is now. Be it publicly calling out Packers management, or using Fox News in an attempt to gain support for his cause. He is acting like a primadonna, and an all around egotistical jerk. He attempted to use his fans, which have supported him for so long, in an attempt to further his own interests. Unfortunately for him, he forgot about the fact that Packers fans are not the idiots he took them to be.
In conclusion, if anyone can come forward with a better argument besides "Favre was the only reason our team was good," then by all means, come forward. His stats, his accomplishments, his contributions to the community - all of that has nothing to do with why so many of us are upset. It is the fact that he RETIRED, left the keys to the QB position to Aaron Rodgers, and then waited until a month before camp starts to say he changed his mind - as if he expected that he could just walk back in a wrench those keys away from Rodgers. As if he expected that he could command an entire franchise to reverse all of the plans they had made without him involved. And going back to my comments about irony; I hope I won't be the only one in seeing the irony of you talking about ignorance being bliss.

We also rescued Favre from life in an alcohol bottle in Atlanta....before we rescued him, he was on the fast-track to irrelevancy.
