Another baseball signing today. As you know the Seattle Mariners released 1st baseman Richie Sexson last week. He was hitting just .218 with 30 RBI's, although Jason Varitex is hitting .218 and he was in the all-star game (go figure). A trade was virtually impossible with his salary. The Mariners will have to "eat" the 6.1M remaining on this years' contract. Although that will be reduced by 390 thousand if he signs with another team, which it looks like he will.
The NY Yankees have reached an agreement with Sexson for the remaining of the season. This came as a big surprise to me, since I don't see what he can add to the team. Will play some against lefties, He may not like being a part-time player. Also if the 2 year slump he's in doesn't end the fans may just boo him out of NY, so for you Sexson fans, keep your fingers crossed that he gets his stroke back.
On a different note, the S.D. Padres traded Tony Clark back to the Arizona D'backs. Clark didn't get much playing time in SD, but who would with Adrain Gonzalez at 1st. He hit .239 with 1 HR. He will probably be a pitch hitter in Arizona as well, which beg the question, what is this trade about? I can understand SD side, but he isn't going to be the hitter to put D'backs over the top. I'm just hoping by Dodgers can make a surge, but that's another story.
