Its been announced! The Olympic roster is out and the big suprise is that Donovan will not play. Thank you very much Alexi Lalas for decreasing our chances at a medal! Love or hate him, he does a lot for team USA. Let's look at the roster.
GK: Brad Guzan, Chris Seitz
DF: Patrick Ianni, Michael Orozco, Michael Parkhurst, Nathan Sturgis, Marvell Wynne
MF: Freddy Adu, Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Stuart Holden, Sacha Kljestan, Danny Szetela
FW: Jozy Altidore, Charlie Davies, Brian McBride, Robbie Rogers
I really wished we could have had a Adu-Donovan-Altidore attack. I'm really excited to see the center defense pairing of Orozco and Parkhurst, it could be the US defensive foundation for years to come. And if the Adu-Altidore partnership duplicates what it did in the U-20s, watch out!
Will the US play with two forwards w/ McBride and Alitidore or will there be 1 lone striker? Also, who should start in that midfield. I think it should be Bradley, Adu, Kljestan and Szetela. I don't think we can play Edu-Bradley together yet. Unless you want to give Bradley more offensive work and Edu plays behind.
What do you all think? I seriously think that the USA are serious medal contenders. The boys face Japan, Nigeria and Netherland in that order. The Dutch are taking a suprise team that includes Ryan Babel and of all people Roy Makaay! The Dutch also included candian-born Jonathan de Guzman (the brother of the Candian De Guzman who plays in Deportivo). The only questionable positions for me are the fullbacks, other than that it looks like a complete team.
Let's read your comments! Are the USA serious medal contenders? Will Adu make us forget about Donovan? Will McBride give us the goals we need? Will Altidore and Adu push their ways to the starting XI for Villareal and Benfica, respectively, through this tourney? Will Danny Szetela resurge after being off the radar for so long?
