Once upon a time, a faded veteran quarterback was traded away to another franchise because a younger hot-shot QB was wasting away on the bench. Well, actually that has happened a few times in N.F.L. history, but my story is the story of Joe Montana, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Montana, the legendary 49er quarterback who brought Super Bowls to San Francisco, was blocking the progress of Steve Young and was dealt to the Chiefs where upon arrival in 1993 he teamed up with Marcus Allen to lead the Chiefs to the A.F.C. championship. It was awkward to see Montana wearing that Chief jersey but if history is indeed meant to repeat itself, it will be awkward to see Brett Favre wear it as well.

Yes, we all know about the Brett Favre story. He wants to play again and the Packers want to move on to Aaron Rodgers who showed promise in his one appearance against Dallas, last year. The Packers do not want to release Favre outright, and would like to trade him to an A.F.C. team. Well, you hear the Ravens as a good landing spot, but I wonder why no one mentions the Chiefs? Herm Edwards has Brodie Croyle penciled in as his starter, but Croyle doesn't have the goods. He's definitely not someone that will make a GM say "I have Brodie, why do I need Favre?". The Chiefs also have a great running back in Larry Johnson, a solid receiver in Dwayne Bowe and an all-world tight end in Tony Gonzalez.

In addition the Chiefs are coming off a solid draft that saw them select players at every level of the defense and re-inforce their offensive line. Their coaching staff is solid. Herm isn't a bad coach, and he's a likeable fiery guy that should get along well with Brett. GM Carl Peterson is an astute GM who Favre may feel comfortable turning to as far as offering advice on how to improve the organization. As far as the division goes, the A.F.C. West is for the taking. The Chargers and Broncos are solid franchises but I believe that Favre gives the Chiefs an edge over both and the Raiders aren't close to contending with the Chargers, Broncos, and Chiefs. Looking at their 2008-2009 schedule (http://www.kcchiefs.com/schedule/) I can give this team with Favre a record of 11-5 which should be good enough for a playoff birth in the A.F.C.

In conclusion, why not Favre? Of all the teams after Brett, I haven't heard about the Chiefs but they make sense. It's a good offense, a potentially solid defense, and a team that needs a certain fiery riverboat gambler to lead them. If Brett is willing to play two more years he should look for Kansas City to be that home.

Wow...that is interesting. It will be interesting to see Favre on the chiefs. At least he won't bother Green Bay anymore...lol

Well, they certainly would be much improved with Favre. I can't imagine they are content with Brodie Croyle.

I must disagree that the Chiefs are closer to turning things around than the Raiders are. Even with Favre, I don't see this Chiefs team going 11-5 as you say. They might crack 8-8 9-7 something like that, with Favre. Still, its better than they'll do with Croyle. I think Favre wants to go to a team thats much more closer to the playoffs than the Chiefs are though. The man wants another shot at the glory of the Super Bowl. He won't get that with the Chiefs.

I was being kind of optimistic, Thugmeister. I did give the Chiefs a couple of victories almost more as upsets then deserved.

9-7 is more realistic.

He might not bother Green Bay but if he makes it to training camp with the Chiefs he will still be in Wisconsin. Not sure how far River Falls is from Green Bay but I'm sure some Packer fans would make the trip just to see him.

With all thats been going down between the two - if he ends up on the Vikes after all ....oooooooooo

The Chiefs have no offensive line whatsoever.

The Pack could trade him to the Chiefs and then the Chiefs could trade him to the Vikings. Then everyone would win.

Aaron Rodgers isn't exactly a hot-shot QB like Young was.

I heard Favre wants to be the all-time sack leader too. Maybe it would work.

Very interesting thoughts, HOVA.

Interesting prospect. I think it's fair to say that we have no idea what the Chiefs will turn out to be until the season gets underway. They had a great draft that filled a ton of needs - it's just a matter of whether the picks compete at the level they thought they would when they were drafted. (And I echo Thug on the Raider comment)

Personally, I hope that if Favre plays, it doesn't turn out to be the biggest mistake of his career. GB built their offense around him and signing with a new team this late may not turn out to be what he hoped for, unless the offense is run similar to GB's.

Yeah, I stretched there too. I stretched in a few places but like I said at the end: Why not Kansas City?

July 18, 2008  03:38 PM ET

No way does Favre make it to the Vikings. I just cannot see Thompson releasing him to go to Minnesota and they will never trade him there.

July 18, 2008  03:47 PM ET

I just hope we don't see Favre showing up to Packers camp and getting escorted off the field by security ala Culpepper in Miami last year.

Imagine!

July 18, 2008  03:58 PM ET

That would be funny.

Great blog, J. Hova. I just didn't think Rodgers was worthy of being put in the same sentence as Young.

July 18, 2008  06:35 PM ET

Interesting blog J,it would be quite awkward to see Favre in a KC uni considering in my lifetime he's only worn packers a packers Jersey. But,this just may work, and hey, maybe Croyle could learn a thing or two.
