Behind black sunglasses and a Florida State baseball cap, former All-American FSU defensive back and NFL veteran Terrell Buckley lays out the rationale for tonight's Seminole Showtime Camp, which brings more than 100 potential recruits together with former FSU star players, some who are current NFL players. "When you help build something, you want to see it go into the future," said Buckley, now an assistant coach for strength and conditioning. "We have a lot of guys who have been in the pros who can help and be a part of keeping the program going." In what could be described as a recruiting spectacular at Doak Campbell Stadium, FSU will play host to some of the top college football recruits in the country as they join more than 50 former players in tonight's camp, subtitled "Camping with the Stars." The event is free for the public to watch and runs from 6:30-8 p.m Now in its second year, the camp offers recruits a chance to demonstrate their talents while learning from FSU coaches and former players turned instructors. "We're trying to bridge that gap between the past and the future," Buckley said. "Tracking down (former players) is hard when you don't have something in place. Numbers change. E-mails change. We're just trying to get something going." Everyone from former players to current FSU coaches realized the need for an event that could actively put FSU's professional football know-how and experience to work as a recruiting magnet. As a university that produces a large number of professional players, Buckley said FSU has the opportunity to do something few schools can. The 2003 FSU Hall of Fame inductee spells it out very clearly: "Let's say you're a future freshman, and you're walking by Charlie Ward, Warrick Dunn, Chris Weinke and all the other guys who are coming (to Seminole Showtime), and you can ask them a question about playing in the pros or about playing your position. What would that do for you?" Though the camp has little to do with what will happen on the field this season, there is a palpable energy around it, Buckley said. "Attitude-wise there's a buzz, and the atmosphere is very positive," he said. "There's a buzz from current players, past players, and coaches. . . . We'll be under the lights in one of the great places for football in the country. What else can you ask for? There's nothing better than that."
