Well everyone, this is the first real blog of the All-Stars group and I just wanted to notify everyone that I need people to be active bloggers for this group. But here it is:
With the NL East race heating up the spotlight is really on the Mets comeback and the Phillies recent fall. The Mets are two games removed from a 10 game winning streak and both of their last wins have been in extra innings. Jose Reyes was the big socre in the 10th last night and becuase of the Phillies loss as well the two teams are in a late July tie for the division right now. Who do I think will win?
Well lets look at some points right now. Its the Mets division to lose in my opinion becuase they have the most talented team and they are the team that was "supposed" to win easily this year becuase of their new additions. Well, they didnt start that way. Willie Randolph was steering them to the ground until Jerry Manuel took over and owned everything up.
But the Mets will win for these three reasons.
1. They have better pitching-Johan Santana is a very good pitcher late into seasons and the Mets have won both of his most recent starts. They have a red hot Mike Pelfrey as well who has been on the W side in 5 of his past six starts as well. John Maine (8-7) is also another great option and the bullpen is led by All-Star closer Billy Wagner (24 saves). They have a balanced staff and they will continue playing like that for the remainder of the season.
2. Hitting-not power, but the average is much better. Jose Reyes and David Wright are hanging around .300, Delgado has been hitting .348 this month and Carlos Beltran is hitting. .270 right now and his still their clutch guy in the 5 spot. They have base stealing in Reyes, Wright and Castillo. They also have another weapon for average in Church. (.307) but he has been injured a lot recently.
3. Last year-they blew a seven game lead in 19 games remaining left into the season. They were really really angry. I dont blame them. Thats why in case they get the lead earlier, dont expect them to blow it again.
