Yesterday was a day of new beginnings for 2 important pitchers. Vicente Padilla and J.J. Putz both came off the DL Sunday.
Vicente Padilla is the best pitcher on the Texas Rangers' pitching staff, no doubt. Although he has a high ERA at 4.41, he is an 11 game winner and easily the ace of their terrible rotation. The Rangers' may not have a shot at a playoff spot in the highly competitive AL, but Padilla is definitely a huge piece to their team. Especially because he could potentially be a big trade piece. I think the Rangers' prove that without pitching, offensive is pretty ineffective. He was on the 15-day DL with a stiff neck. In his return start on Sunday, he pitched beautifully. His stat line went as follows: 7 IP, 3 hits, 2 walks, no ER. I think the AL Wildcard is a crapshoot every year, so although the Angels are always the dominant team in the AL West, the wildcard is still a possibility for the Rangers next year.
Padilla makes his return after coming off the DL Sunday.
J.J. Putz has been battling the injury bug all season. He's only played 21 games to date, and they have been pretty bad. This season he has a 4.95 ERA with only 7 saves. His struggles and battle with staying healthy are definitely big parts of why the Mariners can't seem to win this season. He definitely proved his worth to the M's last season, when he saved 40 games and pitched 71.2 innings. He is their best pitcher in the bullpen, and, when healthy, one of the most dominant and effective closers in the league. In his return yesterday, he pitched 1 inning, gave up no hits and struckout 1. The Mariners are hoping his return can be a birghtspot in a potentially dismal last couple months of the season.
Putz makes hist first appearance since coming off the DL Sunday.
