LB's
1.
Ohio State is one of the deepest teams at LB in the country. They return a star at MLB in James Laurinaitis. "The Animal" is a two time-reigning all-american, and a winner of the Nagurski and Butkus award. Over the last 2 seasons he has 240+ tackles, 7 picks, and 17 tackles for loss. Expect another huge season, and a host of different awards. Next to Laurinaitis is one of the most underrated OLB's in the game. Marcus Freeman is a super athletic LB who flies all over the field. Last year he had over 100 tackles and in his past 2 season has 180 tackles 2 picks and 11 tackles for loss. Expect Freeman to receive some all-american honors this season as well. A host of LB's will hold the third spot. The candidates are Ross Homan, a talented sophomore who had a great freshman campaign a couple of years back. Curtis Terry, a speed rushing LB who will double as a FB, and special teams demon Brian Rolle. Some other players who should contribute include 4* freshman LB's Ettienne Sabino, and Andrew Sweat, backups of a season ago, Tyler Moeller and Austin Spitler, and DE/LB Mark Johnson.
2.
USC also returns a host of talent at LB. The star of the LB's is Rey Maualuga. Maualuga is the most feared player in the game he absolutely has some punishing hits that make you shiver in your spine. He was the defensive MVP of the Rose Bowl last year, and if he plays as he did in that game, he may be the top LB in the nation. Next to him is another all-american candidate in Brian Cushing. Cushing was injured much of last season and therefore only had 25 tackles, but 2 years ago at full strength had 57 tackles and 14.5 tackles for loss, as well as garnering the Rose Bowl defensive MVP award. If he stays healthy expect a big year from the great run-stopper. The third spot could go to any host of players. It will most likely be Kaluka Maiva, another solid LB< who though is a bit undersized is a solid hitter. After him this team has a host of former 5* recruits who should all contribute big time, Chris Gallipo, Clay Matthews and Luther Brown.
3.
One of the most underrated LB corps in the nation, in fact two of the three were named all-mac a season ago, and the other was honorable mention. The star of the three is OLB Clayton Mullins. Mullins was the MAC defensive player of the year a season ago, and for good reason. Mullins had one of the great seasons of any player, and is one of the top LB's this season, he had 142 tackles, and 13.5 tackles for loss. In the middles is Joey Hudson, who is great in coverage and had 99 tackles and 2 picks a season ago. The last spot goes to Caleb Bostic, a great run-stuffer who had 102 tackles and 11 tackles for loss a season ago. After those 3 their is little depth, but still that is very impressive.
4.
South Carolina is a team that will be very tough to stop at LB. The star should be MLB Jasper Brinkley. A year ago Brinkley got hurt in the 4th game and missed the rest of the year. He has since healed and appears to be ready to return to his form of two seasons ago when he had 107 tackles and 14 tackles for loss. Next to Brinkley is Eric Norwood. Norwood played DE a season ago, but new defensive coordinator decide to move Norwood to LB, and expect big numbers from Norwood at OLB. A season ago at DE he had 69 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, and 2 TD's. THe third LB spot should go to Rodney Paulk, though last seasons starter in the middle Marvin Sapp could move over to take over that spot. Paulk is a good LB and had 64 tackles a season ago.
5.
Georgia has one of the most talented LB corps in the nation. The star is senior OLB Dannell Ellerbee. Ellerbee had 93 tackles a season ago, and is a great run stopper as evidenced by his 12 tackles for loss. Ellerbee should receive some all-american honors, as he is among the top OLB's in the game. Next to him in the middle is Rennie Curran. Curran was impressive as a frosh a season ago recording 53 tackles and 9 tackles for loss, and he should see a leap in production in year 2. Many feel he is the best of the group of LB's and could really breakout this season. Speaking of breaking out OLB Akeem Dent should be a breakout candidate as well. Dent had 36 tackles a season ago and should significantly improve that number this season. Behind him is a key reserve Darius Dewburry who should receive plenty of playing time this season.

Secondaries
1.
The star of this secondary is going to be CB Malcolm Jenkins. Jenkins was named all-big-ten each of the past 2 season s and has been starting each of the last 3 seasons for OSU. He is a huge corner at 6-1 208, and can make tackles as evidenced by his 47 a year ago, and he had 4 picks last year too. Expect many honors, and all-american awards, as he is among the top corners in the nation. Next to him is Donald Washington, another future lockdown corner. Washington has been starting/playing nickel CB for 2 years, and is one of the best in the Big Ten. The starting safeties are Anderson Russell and Kurt Coleman. THey compliment each other nicely, Russell is a bigger stronger safety with great skills at the line, and Coleman is a great cover man, with solid hands. Expect to see plenty of Chimidi Checkwa who is the nickel CB/Star and was great at it last year, and backup safety Jamario O'Neal also will play some at the star.
2.
The star of the USC secondary is safety Taylor Mays. Mays is a freak at 6-4 225, and running a 4.24 40. A season ago he had 64 tackles and a pick. Mays has great skills at making plays at the line and laying big hits. Though everyone seems to believe that Mays is the better safety, by a mile , I think Ellison is just as good. Kevin Ellison is a great coverage safety and still has the size (6-1 225) to make plays at the line. A year ago he had 57 tackles 2 picks and 9 tackles for loss. The CB's are not as good as the safeties, but still solid. The leader is Cary Harris, who had 48 tackles and a pick year ago. The other player who should start at CB is Josh Pinkard, a 6-1 215 great athlete, who has good experience as he will be a senior, and should play well.
3.
Oregon is a team that has 4 very good starters in the secondary. The star is strong safety/rover Patrick Chung. Chung actually entered his name in the draft then pulled out last year. Chung had 117 tackles a season ago, a huge number for anyone especially a safety. Chung also had 2 picks, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 2 blocked kicks last year, so he is an all-around playmaker. The CB pair this team returns is very, very good as well. Walter Thurmond also returns after recording incredible numbers for a CB, 103 tackles, 5 picks, 8 tackles for loss, 18 passes broken up, and 2 TD's. He is a great CB, and next to him Jarius Byrd is also very talented. Byrd is a big corner at 6-0 208, and had 65 tackles, 7 picks, 15 passes broken up, 4 tackles for loss, and 1 TD. Those 3 are all among the best at their position and the last starter TJ Ward played time a season ago recording 21 tackles.
4.
Clemson returns all 4 starters from the # 13 ranked pass defense of a year ago.At CB this team has a pair of juniors, Chris Chancellor, and Crezdon Butler.Chancellor is more of the lockdown corner recording 36 tackles and 4 picks a season ago. Butler loves to make plays closer to the line of scrimmage recording 61 tackles and 3 picks last year. THe pair of safeties this team has is incredible. Michael Hamilin had 80 tackles and 4 picks last year, and is among the best in the nation at his position. Next to him is Chris Clemons, an equally talented player who ha d2 picks and 78 tackles last year. All in all this is a great secondary with no weak spots.
5.
Mississippi State has one of the most impressive secondaries in the nation. They return 3 starters to a secondary that was #7 against the pass last year. The star is 3 year starter at free safety Derek Pegues. Pegues had 50 tackles and 5 picks last year and is considered one of the top players for next years NFL draft. Next to him is Keith Fitzhugh, another long time contributor who had 2 picks and 58 tackles last year. The CB's will be anchored by Jasper O'Quinn is a good corner and had 35 tackles and a pick last year. The secondary will improve even more if Anthony Johnson returns this secondary will improve even more.
