Found out today that Josh Childress, one of the brightest young stars for the Hawks, is leaving the NBA for a Greek team. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Childress's deal with Olympiakos is worth nearly $36 million, and that Childress will recieve $5.6 million in his first year. Is this a bad decision for Childress? I think so.
I understand why Childress would leave and play for Olympiakos for all that money, but I think he will soon find out that he will not get as much publicity and won't be on the front cover of any magazines(Heck, has a Hawks player ever?). Childress will be a good player, but I don't think any Americans will hear from him.
You could argue that most of my ideas are spawn from the fact that I am a semi-Hawks fan(I say semi because I don't watch the NBA often and watch the Hawks less often), and you would be right. But I still think that Childress should have stayed in the NBA, not just the Hawks. He may be an MVP in Greece, but an MVP in Greece is lesser known that a benchwarmer in the NBA.

He can get paid big buck while refining his game, and probably come back and play for a serious contender as amore versitle players with shooting range.

I don't think publicity will matter to him when he's making twice as much money tax-free and the club is paying his living expenses. Markets are globalizing. It was only a matter of time before a promising NBA athlete bolted for the Euro-leagues to bring it all full circle for the Ginobilis, Novitskis, and Kirilenkos we wrested away.
