Player of the Week
West Michigan Whitecaps shortstop Brandon Doulas has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for the week of July 14-20. Douglas has been hitting .619 (13-21) with three doubles, on home run, and six RBI's in five games with the 'Caps after being called up to West Michigan last week. In the series with Beloit he went 6-9 with a double and home run in his first games with the Whitecaps. He has four multi-hit games and recorded at least one hit in every game since coming up.
Douglas was the Tigers 11th round draft pick in last month's draft. He played college ball for the University of Iowa, and has quickly moved up the ranks in the Tiger's system. He started his pro career with the Gulf Coast Leaugue Tigers, hitting .333 (9-27) with one home run and five RBI's in seven games. He was then promoted to the short season Oneonta Tigers where he hit .327 (18-55) with three doubles and one home run in 15 games.
Douglas is the fifth player to win the award this season, the last hitter being Roger Tomas on May 27.
Beijing Bound Mud Hens
The U.S. Olympic team announced it's roster for the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China. Current Toledo Mud Hen slugger Mike Hessman and closer Blaine Neal were selected to represent their country. Hessman has had a great were in Toldo so far, hitting 30 home runs (second in pro baseball) and earned his second trip to the AAA All-Star game. His record of run production and defensive play at third base earned his spot on the Olympic roster.
Neal has also earned an AAA All-Star appearance for his ability to close out games on the mound. He leads the International League with 23 saves and has struck out 35 batters through 32.1 innings pitched and boasts a 1.39 ERA.
This teams Olympic Team was selected from Triple-A, Double-A, and Single-A players. Any player not on an active Major League 25-man roster were eligible. Team USA takes on Korea in the opening round August 13.
