In case you haven't read the new developments in Caleb Campbells amazing story and want to believe that the U.S. Government/Military finally did something good for a change, close off this window, find your nearest plkayground, go to the sandbox, dig a hole to fit your head, then put it in that hole.
Caleb Campbell, an Army grad and star football player for the Black Knights, had a chance to make the NFL and would be able to be excluded from active duty and be allowed to serve as a recruiter if he was drafted by an NFL team due to a new Army policy to allow people with extraordinary abilities to serve as recruiters foir their tour of duty.
While Campbell beat the odds and was drafted in the 7th round by the Detroit Lions and was a symbol of the only thing the U.S. Government/Military has done right during the Iraq War, except for finding Saddam of course, and was a beacon of hope that the Republicans actually knew what they were doing and were just misunderstood guys with hearts of gold.
While We Were Wrong
The US Military changed its policy and has ordered the Lions to release their best draft pick of the Millen Era and for Campbell to return to active duty overseas in the war that should have never happened.
So know the Lions and Campbell are in two very dicey situations, the Lions do have the right to keep him on their roster as he was a draft pick, and Campbell was given the right to serve as a recruiter when this policy was made, but know has been asked to return to service and is stuck between a rock and a hard place as he can fight the new policy and be labeled a draft dodger, or he can go to the War and risk his life and playing career overseas and will likely not find a spot on an NFL team when he returns
It disturbs me that U.S. Military has decided to change its policy only after someone finally got to use it. Now this great man and great athlete will have to go to a war the U.S. shouldn't even be in by this point and will likely die or get injured in his tour(s) of duty and will never get the chance to play in the NFL or any pro football league for that matter.
This makes me extremely happy that the Bush era of U.S. politics and the Republican Party's reign are over and we will see some actuall politicians in charge for a change. I am pulling for you Caleb i hope to see you on Sundays, and not in a bodybag.

No truer words can ever be spoken. You change the fricking rules AFTER the fact, and now you have yet ANOTHER potential Pat Tillman situation staring the Army in the face.
Bulls-eye, pal!!! You nailed it!!!

I don't want to get political here.but I understand why it's done. Seeing as how he never actually signed a contract..there's nothing he can do right now. I feel really sorry for him..and it's unfortunate that he can't play in the NFL right now. But, as far as I know, and I'm probably 100 percent wrong, this was strictly a West Point policy and the Army itself had the right to revoke this. Once again I'm probably way off and someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I hope everything goes well for them.
As for this being another Pat Tillman situation..not even close. Two seperate situations...Pat Tillman didn't have an obligation to the United States Military where as Caleb Campbell does...Campbell knowingly went to West Point. I wish him all the best and hope he comes back safe.

Good sentiments but your inflamatory tone (will likely die or get injured in his tour) and bias against the military (this great man and great athlete will have to go to a war)(as if great men don't go to war?) and politicle bias( a war the U.S. shouldn't even be in by this point), really overshadow the underlying humanitarian sentiment. The flaws in the writing are too great to make the point that you really are trying to get at.

I am disappointed that they changed the rules right before he reported to camp. One week before this the Lions spoke with West Point where they asured them that everything was fine. My brother is stationed in South korea and my best friend and my brother in law are both serving in Iraq right now with the Army. Ive talked to all 3 of them and they all have no problem with Caleb serving the war in a different manner. Being a recruiter is very important to the Military, my best friend while he came home during his time off was required to recruit at the local Mall and he said people were very rude to him. yet when my brother came home recentley from Korea he told me how he was waiting for his transfer flight at a McD's and some lady came up and gave him a tearful hug and bought his food for him and then walked away. There is 2 sides to the story and I just hope that he stays safe and in 2010 he can come back and play for the Lions.

Great men do go to War!! Just ask Joe Louis, he served in the Army during war time and also fought and donated all his purse to the Army fund!!!! Caleb has no regrets going to Iraq with his unit, he knows what he chose to do he just wished that they shouldnt have given him the option (which he never asked for, it was already there) and then take it away mere hours from signing and reporting to camp.

It is different if they were fighting against the ****'s or Jaoaneese to protect their country, but Iraq isn't even a threat to the Americans, if america tightens up Airport security, which they did, they have no threat from iraq or Afghanastan and do not have to be in this war.
