In light of Rod's unsurprising recent retirement, I felt the need to post my first blog. Although I think the odds are against him with Elway being the only current HOFer (and Zimmerman entering this year), Rod Smith should be in the HOF someday. First ballot, no. Eventually, yes. He currently holds franchinse records for receptions, receiving yards, touchdown catches, touchdowns, and 100-yard games. He also leads ALL undrafted players in every major receiving category. Let's take a look at his stats against other WR HOFers...
ROD SMITH
11,389 rec. yds, 849 receptions, 68 TD's
LYNN SWANN
5,462 rec. yds, 336 receptions, 51 TD's
ART MONK
12,721 rec yds, 940 receptions, 68 TD's
MICHAEL IRVIN
11,904 rec yds, 750 receptions, 65 TD's
FRED BILETNIKOFF
8,974 rec yds, 589 receptions, 76 TD's
Of the 19 wide receivers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, only 1 (Art Monk) has more career receptions than Smith.
Clearly Rod belongs in this group of HOFers, and his true class, professionalism, and team-first attitude are what Hall of Famers are all about.
