Once again the SEC will dominate College Football according to the so called experts. It is no surprise that they are picked to win it all again considering the slew of powerhouse teams that have been assembled. But this may be the year that another conference comes out of the shadows to assume this role. Many have the Big Twelve as a likely contender considering the recent emergence of traditionally mediocre teams winning big. Other says that the Big 10 or PAC 10 is the one. Many base this ranking on the top teams in there conference but is this completely accurate? Should the conference be ranked as a whole when considering the "best conference" in the land? Let's do a little comparison and you be the judge. I will limit this to just the top four conferences (according to the "experts") I understand that opinions will vary about the rankings of these teams within conferences. This is simply a comparison of strength from top to bottom. Winner denoted by Highlight.

I think Arkansas would beat Iowa State, and I dunno about UGA over USC, they got a lot of speed on that Trojan team.

July 25, 2008  09:09 PM ET

uga would beat usc
secondly, i dont think this years michigan team could compete with the florida team you have them with. uga lse and uf are all preseason top ten. michigan is unranked. cmon, even though i hate the gators u still gotta respect them

Interesting,let me compare:

SEC
UF should be second,LSU third
Oregon State 4th?Wow.Really now.I must be oblivious to what's happening out there.
Michigan in front of PSU AND the Ilini???HAHAHA
LOL,Peter King has Texas Tech in the BCS championship. Here they're fifth. This should be an awesome season!

Good job

This is very intriguing. I would definitely think that Wisconsin would be incredibly competitive at 2..we'd lost to LSU..but we would definitely prove something with that game. At 3 I would actually take Oregon..I like what they do a lot and I think they'd dominate Florida. All in all I think you mostly got it right.

July 25, 2008  11:55 PM ET

are we talking this year, last 5 years, or what, because as of recently LSU has been the best team in the SEC in the last 5 years record wise

July 26, 2008  12:34 AM ET

We're talking this upcoming season. Remember we lost Ryan Perriloux the Next coming savior right behind Obama (Sarcasm intended) there's no way we can compete. You saw the Orelus decommit right. What was he thinking? If you want to go back to Florida at least play for a winning program. Geese!

I like this blog.

Of all the teams listed, I see five A-caliber teams: The first four SEC teams, and Southern Cal. Everyone else, to me, is B+ and below.

Fun stuff. What you could do, if you had several hours to kill, is use the last year's strength of schedule (average opp. winning percentage) , then, take it to the 2nd degree, and get the opponent's oppenent's last year winning percentage. That is usually enough to shut up even the most persistent, annoying fan about strength issues. I think I would like to try that with UGA's last year data.

Hairgut,

You pull that off and UGA should give you an Honorary Doctorate. That's a lot of research and work. I can absolutely understand spending a few hours pulling something like that off. Let me know how it turns out.
