MLS ALL STARS DOWN WEST HAM UNITED

Last night at BMO Field in Toronto the MLS All Stars beat visiting West Ham United 3-2 to notch their 4th consecutive All Star victory. In a well played match by both teams, the Hammers opened the scoring in the 26th minute as striker Dean Ashton took a pass from Carlton Cole and placed a right footed kick passed Goalkeeper Matt Reis into the net. The West Ham lead lasted less than a minute when David Beckham played the ball to Cuauhtemoc Blanco who back-heeled it to Christian Gomez who easily scored the tieing goal. Blanco, who only played the first half, gave the MLS the lead in the 44th minute zipping a right-footed shot inside the far post.

In the second half West Ham drew even in the 67th minute when Ashton belted in his second goal of the match. The score remained tied for a very brief time. The deciding goal came in the 69th minute on a penalty kick from Houston Dynamo's Dwayne De Rosario. De Rosario's kick was a beauty that hit the bottom of the cross bar. West Ham Goalkeeper Robert Green never even had a chance to stop it. Coach Steve Nicol has to be really happy about the way his team played. It was a very enjoyable match to all who saw it. Last night's attendance at BMO was a capacity crowd of 20,844. Blanco's first half performance made him the games obvious choice for the MVP award. Los Angeles Defender David Beckham played the full 90 minutes and had an assist.

DYNAMO AQUIRE SAN JOSE FORWARD KEI KAMARA

The Houston Dynamo obtained San Jose Earthquake striker Kei Kamara yesterday for a first-round draft pick next year and an undisclosed amount of money. Although Kamara has scored only two goals this season in eleven starts, he's been a fan favorite at San Jose. The 23 year old from Sierra Leone is considered to be an up and coming talent in the MLS and should fit in well with the Dynamo attack.

Kamara came to San Jose from the Columbus Crew prior to the start of the 2008 season. Houston is currently tied for second place in the Western Division with the Los Angeles Galaxy with 23 points. Real Salt Lake sits atop the division with 24 points.

San Jose is by far the worst team in the League this season. They've scored just 11 goals in 17 games and sit at the bottom of the Western Division with a record of 3-9-5.

DYNAMO-UNITED GAME FINALLY OVER

This was a game apparently not meant to be. The soccer Gods cast heavy rain upon RFK Stadium on June 4rth resulting in postponement after only 17 minutes of playing time. A make up game was scheduled for Tuesday July 22nd but was postponed yet again due to a power outage at RFK. The League requested that both teams remain in D.C. and play the make up game on Wednesday night June 23rd.

Wednesday evening offered more of the same as the game began amist a drizzling rain. Houston took a 1-0 lead in the 20th-minute with a goal by midfielder Brian Mullan. By the 53rd minute of the game the rain turned into a torrential downpour causing a delay in play. The delay lasted nearly three hours before the two teams were able to return to an almost unplayable pitch. DC had a few opportunities to score but Dynamo keeper Pat Onstad stopped every shot that DC made. Brian Ching put the game out of reach in the 79th minute when he headed home a free kick from Brad Davis.

This was Houston's second win over United in the past week since Houston won a SuperLiga qualifier on July 19 by a score of 3-1.

MLS ANNOUNCES EXPANSION PLANS FOR 2011.

As we all know the MLS has an expansion franchise in Seattle that's set to begin play next season. The Seattle Sounders have already sold 15,000 season tickets for the 2009 campaign. Seattle will be the MLS's 15th team. Also in the works are plans for a 16th team to begin play in Philadelphia in 2010.

Following a meeting of the MLS Board of Governor's yesterday, League commissioner Don Garber announced that the MLS now has plans to expand even further. Garber said that the league would like to have 18 teams by the start of the 2011 season. He also said that the league would provide specific details on the expansion application process within the next seven days.

The cities being considered as hosts for the final two franchises include St. Louis, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Montreal, a second team for New York, Ottawa, Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, British Columbia.
