As reported by ESPN about 25 minutes ago, the Yankees acquired Pudge Rodriguez from the Detroit Tigers for Kyle Farnsworth.
The Tigers pick up some much needed relief help in Farnsworth who has a 3.65 ERA this season. Pudge was getting older, and I think they are going to try and get rid of most of their older players, and try and get younger and more athletic for next year.
The Yankees desperately needed to find a replacement for Jorge Posada who just recently announced he will undergo season-ending surgery.
A good deal for the Yankees? HELL yea. They get a 14-time All-Star who has 13 gold gloves and is considered one of the greatest catchers of all time. But don't let his age fool you, he's hitting .295 this season and will be a great addition to the Yankee lineup.
The best part about this deal is that Pudge will be gone next year, and the Yanks don't have to struggle with contracts, etc. They can just part with Pudge and insert Posada back into the lineup.
This is huge, because they get an experienced vet who can handle his glove and a pitching staff. They are trying to improve their ballclub with every move and this was extremely smart.
The AL East race will again get all the more interesting with this move. Although the Yanks are only 3 out of the division, they still have the shot at the wildcard.
I think this also adds alot of pressure on Boston or Tampa Bay, because the Yanks are wheeling and dealing, making moves left and right to improve their ballclub.
