My computer has been broken, so I havn't been here in a while, and I don't know how you fans feel about the Favre issue.  So this is directed toward the Favre-backers.

Packer Fans, its time for you to take off the Favre fan glasses and see this situation for what it is. Now, I was Favre's biggest supporter against critic up until he announced officially he wanted back in. As it is, I still am his fan. However, I see now that Favre has just as a big an ego as any other superstar athlete, and this whole "game" is a result of his ego not allowing him to graciously step away. People, don't you see how he's doing much more harm than good? He is a distraction that no team can deal with. However, people in this state love Favre so much, they don't care to see how it is much more of a problem than a help. Its gotten so bad, an area man bought ad space in the Appleton Post Crescent to write a letter to the Packer management urging them to bring back Favre. This person pointed out the numerous accomplishments by Favre, to which I say, so what? 3 MVPs is an incredible accomplishment, but the last one was 10 years ago. Should the Dolphins bring back Dan Marino just because he has incredible, hall of fame numbers?

I have seen numerous complaints directed toward Ted Thompson, saying that he should be the one to go, not Favre. Don't you see how idiotic this is? Do you remember who the last GM was? Mike Sherman, and the team finished 4-12 his last season. Thompson brought the team from 4-12 to 13-3 in two years, and you say he's an idiot and call for his head???

Furthermore, why the hate for Aaron Rodgers? Sure, we don't know exactly how well he will play, but all signs point to him being a fantastic NFL QB. How do these fans know that Favre would even be good this season? He did start to to tail off toward the end of the year, and lost the championship game almost by himself. He played pathetic int the second half. Anyways, Aaron Rodgers just might be a hall of famer, but in your hero worship, you refuse to let him have his chance.

So Packer fans, kick Favre to the curb where he belongs. I applaud the Packer management for taking a firm stand and not allowing this egotistical d-bag do as he pleases. I hope this money offer convinces him to stay away for good. It will be disappointing if they allow him to come to camp, and this would create even more problems.

Wow, I didn't think anyone had the nerve to say that. You are correct of course, but people are blinded sometimes by a "legend". I remember a back-up QB that was selected in the 6th round #199. He was thrust into a game because the starter got injured, and oh yeah he took them to the SB. That's right,,,,,,Tom Brady. Give Rodgers a chance to see what he can do. Nice blog

July 31, 2008  01:10 PM ET

First off, I would argue that FAVRE brought the team from 4-12 to 13-3.

Secondly, what does ego have to do with anything? The majority of professional athletes have big egos, and that holds true for QBs. Hell, REX GROSSMAN has an big ego and he is TERRIBLE.

Lastly, I would take a CERTAIN hall of famer over a "might be a hall of famer" any day. Rodgers has done NOTHING to show that he can play at that level, while Favre has done so year in & year out.

Thompson has played a terrible hand. He should've just told Brett that they'd take him back but that he'd have to beat out Rodgers... or he should've just given him a release & been the better man

Welcom to 6-10. Enjoy.

chicago al | 07/31/08, 01:10 PM

Yes b/c none of the free agents or players that Ted drafted did nothing to improve the team.

The players around Favre turned the Packers into a 13-3 team...it wasn't Favre

July 31, 2008  01:47 PM ET

Excuse me-

The entire packer team including Brett Favre and the coaches brought that team to a 13-3 season. And Brett is included in the credit given for that record. Brett Favre helped an excellent team get that record. So what, you think a quarterback has nothing to do with it? I'd like to see how far we would have gotten with Grossman. Yes, TT brought the players in. Fine. He wants to move on. FINE! But don't throw one of the best players you have ever had under the bus. Let him play. Let him go to the Vikings if he wants. Who cares!!!! TT has as big an ego as Favre. And if Favre didn't have some sort of ego, he wouldn't be #4 and he sure as heck wouldn't belong in football. I could name plenty of players worse than him.

July 31, 2008  01:57 PM ET

Yesterday, I stuck up for good ole TT. Today, I don't believe a word he says. I think there is something to this TT and Favre issue. Unless TT is so afraid of getting his but whooped by Favre or he afraid once he doesn't own Favre anymore some truth will come out, I don't understand why they can't just let him go so he play if he wants to.

July 31, 2008  02:04 PM ET

****?? I was thinking that Favre was the world's biggest baby, now I think the the Packer's are just STUPID. Paying for him to stay retired? Why??? Trade him for what he is worth. If Vikings or Bears want him, let them pay him what he is worth. I would think that this would only help both teams, with the obvious caveat that one team is going to come out looking like the idiots when the other wins. I think it is pretty safe to say that the team who gets Favre will see a huge jump in ratings. And if it is the Vikings or Chicago, more power to him. The only way Rodgers is going to silence his critics is to play against his predecessor. I can't see how the rivalry won't benefit basically everyone.

July 31, 2008  02:06 PM ET

Favre's got something to prove and Rodgers has gotten something to prove. This may just outshine the Manning-Brady rivalry. Definite boost to the NFC if a trade goes through.

July 31, 2008  02:59 PM ET

TT is obviously afraid of Favre, and he's letting HIS OWN ego prevent him from making the logical decision: Let Favre return and compete like any other player for the starting QB position. This makes THE MOST sense even from a business perspective. Favre has always been a great attractor of new fans to GB, from young and old, and has always helped sell a lot of Packer items to the general public. He's internationally known, and in the last 16 years has helped spread the Packer's popularity to a world level.

Don't be stupid and do what the 49ers did with Montana. The 49ers lost a lot of fans and respect over that. The whole idea of being the "Green Bay Packers" used to be about more than just business. It also used to be about family values and a non-franchise mentallity. If you played for the Green Bay Packers you were the member of a family. Does every one forget that Green Bay continued to play Ray Nitschke long past his prime?

Sure, Brett made a mistake in retiring, but you don't treat a family member like this. Play him or release him to play where he chooses, even if that means Minnesota. Go back to being the "Green Bay Packers", not the Patiriots or Yankees....

July 31, 2008  03:00 PM ET

Nice article. Brett had an amazing year last year. He also had some terrible years and performances (particularly in playoff games) over the years. There are no guarantees with him at the helm being the Pro Bowl caliber player he was last year. Don't forget that he didn't have the live-in personal trainer getting him in shape. There is no way he is as physically ready as he was last year. BTW, I've been and am a big Favre fan. I wish he hadn't retired. However, that doesn't mean I think it's a good idea for him to unretire now.

July 31, 2008  03:07 PM ET

I'm not sure that I feel as strongly about this, but I have to agree. There is no guarantee, especially given the fact that Favre didn't have the personal live-in trainer, that he is even in football shape. Given his age, it's more important than ever that he be in prime shape going into the season. The "want to" is very different than the "can do" in this case. Blaming Ted T. for all of this isn't logical. The organization, starting with Ted in terms of draft picks and trades built this team. This TEAM (not just Brett) took them to the conference championship. I've been (and continue to be) a Favre fan. However, I'm a Packer fan first. I wish Brett hadn't retired but...he did. I'm disappointed more in how he's handled this fiasco than in how Packer management has and hope they can work things out. At this point, we'll all be second guessing the situation for years to come, regardless of the ultimate outcome.

July 31, 2008  03:48 PM ET

Favre has every right to play if he wants to.

Period.

If he wants to play, he wants to play, it is not an ego issue.

Thompson can't get credit for the teams record last year. It was a team accomplishment and Favre was the leader.

Thompson has a bigger ego than favre and has made many mistakes - just look at Justin Harrell, for an example. What a fricken first round blunder!!!

The only mistake Favre made was retiring too early - and he did so under pressure.

Thompson has screwed this thing up so bad that now he is going into the Packers piggy bank to solve his problem.

The Packers management are now OFFICIALLY the f*** - ups in this whole mess as evidenced by their $20 million offer to Favre to make their incompetence not so obvious.

Too late - the whole world sees it!

BTW - I am Favre's biggest fan - not you - you traitor. Also, you are not a Packer fan - you are a Packers management fan.

July 31, 2008  03:57 PM ET

go packers

but at the same time i prefer seeing them WIN games. last i checked they were in the nfc championship game last year.....now they have a tougher schedule, am i missing something here? is there a reason people are abandoning favre simply because he retired early and changed his mind? id prefer the proven hall of famer over the unproven 3rd year rookie any day.

July 31, 2008  04:15 PM ET

I agree with you. Favre is thinking way too highly of himself. I'm a Packer fan first..and a Favre fan second. Heak Kick made an interesting point...why are we Packer fans so willing to abandon Favre? Well, why are so many Packer fans already wanting to call Aaron Rodgers a failure. I'll admit it...I don't know how Aaron is going to do. But, let's all give him a chance. The Packers commited so much time in the offseason to Aaron Rodgers...why are people just willing to abandon all of that? Who's to say that Brett Favre won't have a bad year this year? The real thing that we as Packer nation needs to be concerned about is getting Ryan Grant signed up long term..that's where our concern needs to be.

July 31, 2008  04:15 PM ET

So what, you think a quarterback has nothing to do with it? I'd like to see how far we would have gotten with Grossman.

mags08 | 07/31/08, 01:47 PM

Rex Grossman went to a SB though....so yeah, a QB can have nothing to do with it b/c clearly he didn't contribute much of anything to the Bears going to the SB.

July 31, 2008  04:18 PM ET

just look at Justin Harrell, for an example. What a fricken first round blunder!!!

DiegoNP | 07/31/08, 03:48 PM

Remember Jamal Reynolds? Every GM will have a 1st round blunder...and who knows, Harrell may do well...yeah, he's not in training camp right now due to injury but he may still be able to play - we'll see, don't write him off yet.

July 31, 2008  04:19 PM ET

BTW - I am Favre's biggest fan - not you - you traitor. Also, you are not a Packer fan - you are a Packers management fan.

DiegoNP | 07/31/08, 03:48 PM

Your words - "I am Favre's biggest fan"

aka

Favre fan, not a Packer fan.
