There is one great story in France's failing to advance from the group stages at Euro 2008 -- namely that Lillian Thuram was not called upon to play any more matches, which increased his likelihood of living a long life. His retirement today due to the heart condition that took his brother early is sad, but he retires as the most capped player in French history and as one of the most successful players in Juventus history with four titles in five years (yes, I still count the "stripped" titles, they were earned on the field) and a CL finals appearance with la Vecchia Signora. In a world of spoiled, greedy brats, Lillian always stood out as a true and humble man. He is also unlike many, fully aware of the world around him. Hopefully he will enter the world of politics or activism and use his fame for the greater good, but regardless I wish Lillian a long and fruitful life and thank him for his time in world football.

So glad he's not playing this year. When news first broke about the condition, there were a few reports that he would try and play despite the recommendations of the doctors. At 36, it just wouldn't be worth the risk. He's accomplished enough.

He's been an icon for French football on and off the pitch. Certainly he's been an influential footballer in France and around the world. He was always the first to speak out against racism in football.

I remember him scoring against Croatia in the WC98 and then sliding on his knees and having his hand on his chin looking like he wasnt really sure of how he had done it.

I also remember him lecturing one of the kids that ran on the field during the exhibition game vs Algeria.

I can see him being like George Weah and having a successful career in politics.
