Remember in March, when people were labeling the Tigers as World Series contenders? Or people thought the Mariners and Padres would contend for their divisions? Or when the Marlins, Rays, and Twins were all expected to be in last place?
I certianly do. And we see it every year. Predictions that turn out wrong. The truth is, the Tigers window for a playoff push is shutting by the day. The Mariners and Padres are two of the worst teams in baseball. And the Marlins are 1.5 games out of the NL East, the Twins are tied for the NL Central, and the Yanks and Sox are looking up at baseball's second best record- the Tampa Bay Rays.
So with things a little clearer in mind right now. Here are the predictions for division by division with records.
But as we saw with the Mets last September, nothing is written in stone till it's over. Sorry Mets fans.
x=clinched division
y=clinched wild card
z=home field advantage
AL East
1. xBoston Red Sox 97-65
2. yTampa Bay Rays 95-67
3. New York Yankees 93-69
4. Toronto Blue Jays 80-82
5. Baltimore Orioles 73-89
AL Central
1. xChicago White Sox 93-69
2. Detroit Tigers 88-74
3. Minnesota Twins 88-74
4. Kansas City Royals 75-87
5. Cleveland Indians 72-90
AL West
1. xzLos Angeles Angels 103-59
2. Texas Rangers 81-81
3. Oakland Athletics 77-89
4. Seattle Mariners 57-105
With just about 2 months left in the baseball regular season, anything can happen. But I certainly the Angels getting home field advantage, as well as Chicago winning the Central. I see Seattle having the worst record in baseball, going over 100 losses. I see Detroit making a strong push towards the playoffs.
As for the AL East. The top 3 teams are very difficult. You can have any combo as the division winner and wild card with each prediction seeming likely to happen.
