I'm really liking the Colorado Rockies more and more. Every time I see them, they seem to impress me. I'm not certain they have the pitching to make up the deficit in the West. But they seem to have the perfect combination of speed and power, youth and veteran leadership to make a run. Especially now that third baseman Garrett Atkins has started hitting again.
The Tigers have been unloading some pitching lately. Earlier in the week they got rid of Wilfredo Ledezma and today they sent Mike Maroth to the Cardinals. Certainly, both parts may have been expendable. But I think that Maroth might just turn it around in St. Louis. Or at least be serviceable. The National League will help him and Dave Duncan might be a good influence.
The Orioles still don't have a manager three games after firing Sam Perlozzo. They won the last nights, as solid pitching performances were rewarded. But they are off to Arizona and there are real possibilities that Miguel Tejada and Erik Bedard are headed to the DL. The decision on Tejada is likely to be made today. The Orioles want him to go on the DL, but the Shortstop is fighting it. They may wait a few days before making a decision on Bedard. The Padres were extremely impressed with both Bedard and Jeremy Guthrie. The latter has to be a true candidate for American League Rookie of the Year.
Do you get the sense that the Indians and Tigers are going to battle it out all season long like this in the American League Central? I don't. I just think one of them will be done by the end of August. Or maybe one will have pulled away by then. I'm not willing to guess which one it will be, yet. But I really can't imagine both teams playing so close for the whole season. I'm leaning towards the Tigers sticking, on pure pitching alone.
