Two things I'm taking away from UFC 87. The Huerta/Florian fight had all the potential for Fight of the Year. I guess Florian had other plans. And, Brock Lesnar is for real. Kimbo who?
Let me start out with my Most Disappointing Fight of the Year, Huerta/Florian. Out of all the previously billed "Fight of the Year's" that came out of Dana White's mouth, I actually believed this one was going to be it. It had all the ingredients. Huerta with the huge fan base, great striking, and an uncanny will to win VS Florian, the student of the game with the self-proclaimed nickname of "The Finisher". Not this time I guess Kenny. You ran around like a 155lb Lyoto Machida. Am I the only one that thinks they should deduct points for running? Kenny had ZERO aggression and ZERO Octagon control. He won the fight, based on the current scoring system, but he lost in my mind. No one wants to see that type of "technical" fight, and you're not going to get a title shot like that Florian. Especially when you call yourself "The Finisher" and state that you have "improved striking" and are going to go out there and "fight an entertaining fight." Nope, nope, and nope. 0-3 Kenny. What you should've said was what you said in the post-fight press conference: "I wanted to go out there and fight a good technical fight. You can't go out there and get in a brawl with Huerta." Then I wouldn't have been so disappointed. Technical=Lame.
Now, to a much more exciting/shocking fight: The domination of Heath Herring. This fight was over when the bell rang. Brock flew out of his corner with a flying knee that Herring side stepped. God only knows the kind of damage that would've caused. No matter, because Brock's first punch would send Heath end over end to the canvas. Looked like I was watching a video game. Heath did his best to recover, but Brock was on him like a lion on a wildebeast. Lesnar landed knee after knee and punch after punch to a grounded Herring. And every punch looked like it was jarring Heath's skull inside his skin. Don't know what those punches feel like, don't ever want to know, but you can beat Herring doens't feel well today, or for the next week. Can't wait to see the length on the suspension the Commission deals out to Heath. This was a total domination of a UFC vet. Congrats Brock, no longer a side-show attraction (Kimbo Slice), you are legit. Before the fight Herring was saying that he has fought bigger and stronger wrestlers than Lesnar, and that Lesnar had no business fighting someone of his caliber. Still feel that way Heath?
All in all, it was a good show. Would've been great if not for that Huerta/Lyoto...er Florian mishap. Brock Lesnar certainly seems like the "the next big thing". Given some more training and a few more fights, he's going to be scary. Anderson Silva scary.
