This is my first blog so please be gentle..................................
Over the course of the last few weeks it has become more and more apparent that yes, Barry Bonds WILL break the home run record, and that upsets me. Not for the conventional and obvious reasons either, the fact that Barry Bonds took steriods no longer affects me. The fact is players have looked for and taken advantage of everything from spit, embree boards, vasline, pine tar, corked bats to "greenies". These are just the one's I know about, and can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure theres a hundred more, and we need to look no futher than last years World Series to see there is an "unwritten" rule about what is and what is not cheating.
The fact is Sammy Sosa, Jason Gambi and yes Barry Bonds are proving that they have extraordinary talent of hitting a baseball. They truly have a gift for the game they play when they are HEALTHY, and thats the key word "HEALTHY". Barry has shown that at 44 yrs. old the game has almost past him by. Sammy is showing that maybe there a little left in the tank, and Jason well, make a deal with the devil and sonner or later there he's going to ask for payment, but what if steroids didn't let you hit the ball farther. Rather in Sammy, Jason and Barry case lets you heal quicker to hit the ball more offen. Is that cheating ??? it a good debate to have for a long time.
Again it's not why I'm mad at Barry. The fact is he had a chance to walk away from the game 2 yrs. ago. He would still have his single season home run record. He would still have NO championship rings. He was hurt and barley played in 2005. If he stayed away, he would have gained some respect for the game that has given millions. He would have given his critics one less topics to rip him apart about, and most importantly he would have given Hank Aaron a few more years to hold baseball most hollowed record. To be broken by barring injury by A-Rod. Thus allowing baseball, the fans, and Mr. Aaron the proper passing of the torch. That would have been a great story book ending to a pretty dark chapter in baseball. Alas Barry only cares about Barry. Again he shows his lack of respect for everyone around him.
Let's also not forget he's breaking more than a record in a book. He takes away some of the glammor of a man as great as Hank Aaron. For those don't know Hank Aaron, he started playing professinal baseball in 1951 for the Negro leagues for Indianpolis Clowns, and help them to a Nergo World title. In 1952 he was signed by the Boston Braves. This started a career that included 24 All-Star appearances, 3 gold gloves, a Wprld Series ring 1957 and one MVP. Those were not even his biggest acheivements, lets add first player to 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. Only player to hit 30 home runs in 15 seasons, or 20 home runs in 20 seasons. He never hit more that 47 home runs in a single season. He played in over 100 games per year until his last and still played in 85 in 1976. Then in the last 2 years when it became clear he was going to break Babe Ruth's record. He had to deal with not only yankee fans, and old timers who said he did it in to many games, but the death threats, and commissioner who was friends with Babe and did not want to see that record fall less that 20 years after his single season record fell. He also had to deal with all the hate mail form all bigots and racists across the country. Any one of these obstacles would have stoped most men, but like Jackie Robinson before him Hank Aaron refused to take no for an answer. So on April 8th 1974 he became home run champ. King of the baseball world, not bad for a kid from Mobile AL.
This is what Barry refuses to respect, he has chosen himself over other's time and time again. Weather it be the BALCO trial letting his "friend " go to jail rather than tell the truth, or selling out teammates on more than occasion. He's hate the media, but will not go away quietly. Like Mark Maguire did. Love or hate Mark he waked away not to be heard form agian, until he was draged out. Now Barry say "he's hates the way basecall is treating him". Plus refuses to give the HOF any memorabilia. He still contiues to collect a 18 million dollar pay check though. He could of walked away and held some dignity and pride in the one's who paved the path for him to follow. Once again as always Barry proves Barry's about Barry.
There is also the fact that if A-Rod has a major injury and is unable to break the "new*" home run record. There a possiblity that the leader of hits and home runs are not in the HOF. That just cheepens the hall and it desveres more.
By some time in July or August Barry will have more home runs than "hammerin" Hank. He will never have the respect Mr. Aaron work so hard to rightfully earn..............
