Colorado State has named its' starting quarterback for the season opener against Colorado. It's Billy Farris.
Really.
What?
I wrote Billy Farris. Maybe you don't know him but CSU feels real good about him.
If you listen to new Rams' coach Steve Fairchild, it sounds as though he feels quite confident that Farris not only earned the position but that the big chucker from Baton Rouge, La. will be a quality perfomer.
So Mr. Unknown becomes the man of mystery for Buff defenders, putting a whole lot of pressure on the CU defense and much better known quarterback Cody Hawkins of the Buffs offense.
Farris won't have the tools that Hawkins will so while the expectations are smaller on him, so is the pressure. If things go well in practice and Farris and the Rams' offense have confidence going into the game then Farris should just play a free-wheeling game, limit mistakes and go for the throat.
Expect the Buffs to try to pound the ball at first and look to supplement that attack with the mid-range passing game. If the running game is churning out yards and Hawkins is hitting on shorter passes, look for the deep ball then. CU should have enough talent where, if execution is present, it won't matter much what Farris and the Rams do but if the Buffs are bumbling around, Farris and CSU could make this an interesting game.
