With the start of the new season rolling around, pollsters, fans, and anyone who watches college football has their own opinion about the best team in the NCAA.  As sure as everybody has their favorite, there are a million and one arguments for why.  The thing that most people do not look at though, especially at the start of the season, is who will be the biggest disappointment.  Excluding bowl games some will argue that it was USC last year with the loss to Stanford, or maybe Notre Dame.  Some will argue that it was Michigan while some even feel it could be Florida with the massive drop off in defensive production.

All will have their opinions on last year, but based on pure speculation, very unscientific research, and some 1-900 number psychics, I feel that this big "let down" team this year will be Georgia.  If you are a Georgia fan, don't get too upset.  This has absolutely no bearing on your season, just like every other blog or article written.  Remember they get to play the games and settle it on the field.

Personally, I hope I am wrong.  As an LSU fan, I want Georgia to be ranked number 1 when they come to Death Valley on October 25th.  As the great Rick Flair would say, "To be the man, you got to beat the man!"

Based on their schedule and the pressures that any team is under staring the season as number 1, I do not feel that they will maintain this ranking.  After playing LSU on the 25th , they play Florida on the 1st of November at a neutral site.  After a week with Kentucky, they get to take on Auburn.  This is no easy undertaking for any team.

Like I said, I am by no means an expert, and I am trying to pick a team to fit a role that no one wants to look at before the season.  As I stated at the beginning of this blog, just as in picking the best team for the upcoming season, as many people will have an argument for this team choice also.

I agree with your assessment. Georgia has a very difficult schedule and it will be tough to make it through the season without at least two losses. Personally I don't believe there will be an SEC team with only one loss. This is what will keep us out of the championship game this year. I hope that I;m wrong as well. I hope that Georgia plays for the title against Ohio State, Then next year i would like to see Auburn play Ohio State and then when Alabama gets that #1 class from last year developed, they can play OSU. That would make 5 straight losses in the championship game. Ha!

CenLa, yeah that would be great.

i agree 100% percent with you. first of all, being in the sec is going to give Georgia ATLEAST 2 loses, plus the big hype of them bein pre season # 1. speakin of, when does the preseason AP poll come out cuz in my opinion the coaches USA today poll doesn't even matter.

Maybe UGA loses 2 next year LSU lost two and still went to the title game and won NC. Would UGA be disappointing by doing the same thing?

Good blog WD.

With Georgia ranked #1, they have to be a "let down" team this year.

August 13, 2008  01:31 PM ET

...unless they win out. Even if UGA beats everyone except one team (especially UF b/c most people expect that game to be a tight one), then that would not be a let down also.

I would guess USC b/c of their losses on the offense or Clemson b/c they always choke. UGA could be a let-down team also b/c they're ranked so high.

We'll see.

I guess I am in the minority then that if Georgia loses two but still wins title they are a disappointment.

August 14, 2008  05:37 PM ET

I don't see UGA losing more than 2...and they can possibly win it all with 2 losses.

Everybody is underestimating the defense.....

That's crazy talk, nobody gets to the championship game with two losses!
