This Just In!!!

Michael Phelps was just in the 100 butterfly, trying to tie Mark Spitz with seven gold medals in one Olympic Game. And he did it by this much. Think of a second as pizza. Cut the pizza into 100 slices, and take one slice. That is how much Phelps beat out 2nd place from.

Since I just saw the event, I can't remember every single detail. But some guy by the name of Cavic was in the lead the whole time, with Phelps trailing enough to give many people--including his mom--worries. Then there was the turn. Cavic in the lead, Phelps in second...and it didn't seem he was gaining ground--er, water. 75 out of 100 meters to go, and Phelps is making a push. On the last push everything came together. Now imagine this in slow motion with an aerial camera: The walls on the top of your imagination-box, left lane is Cavic, right lane is Phelps. Cavic reaches out with a huge pull after the wall. At the same time, Phelps finishes a stroke and lets a quick, almost half-pull out some how. Phelps barely hits the wall in time.

Unbelievable. Seriously, nobody believed it. My whole family and I were like "he's not getting 1st", and when he hit the wall and the computer-added rankings floating over the lanes came up, it was a mixture of "NO WAY!" and "YESSS!!!!". They put the split up, -.01, and I couldn't belive what I was looking at. Neither could Mamma Phelps. She put up two-fingers, screaming like Phelps got 2nd, looked at the scoreboard, and basically fell into her seat. That pretty much sums up what most people felt like when they saw the final result.

Now it is all but safe to say that Michael Phelps is the greatest Olympian ever. Better than Jesse, Cassius, Wilma, everyone. He already has the record for total medals ever, and now he has tied Mark Spitz for most golds in the Olympics. With one more event left for Phelps, one more swim, anything can happen. But we all expect Phelps, who scored a new world record in every event he got gold in except this one, will win gold and reach Olympic immortality--that is, if he didn't reach that already.

Man, that was one crazy race.
