Cody Hawkins had an up-and-down season in 2007 or a fantastic start to his college career, depending on the viewpoint one wishes to take about the Buffs sophomore quarterback as he heads into 2008.
There's a lot of talk about his shortcomings (moderate arm strength, limited vision at his height, marginal escapism in the pocket and a lack of speed to make plays with his legs) but his strengths (intelligence, leadership, will to win) are a package that most coaches dig deep for when recruiting.
So, regardless of what Hawkins' critics might say, the son of head coach Dan Hawkins has become one of the most indispensable players on the Buffs' roster. After all, Commander Cody gets hurt, who's going to fly the plane to safety?
Nick Nelson? The man hardly saw the field last season when all he had to do was beat out a 3-star freshman recruit. Nelson is a quarterback who can likely handle clipboard holding, handoffs and kneel downs but not much more.
Ballyhooed prospect Matt Ballenger? Yeah, he looks the part (6-4, 230) but he's an infant as far as development. When he was recruited it was clearly apparent he was a projection, a guy who was going to need time to grow mentally with the likely payoff during his junior and senior years.
Tyler Hansen? Again, like Ballenger, a player with talent (mobility and a capable arm) who might turn into a player. 3 years from now.
So, in Cody We Trust.
If he goes down, the Buffs might think about going to a new offense that doesn't utilize a quarterback.
