OK, so Michael Phelps wants to be considered in the pantheon of athletic greats such as Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan. Just because he won 8 gold medals? C'mon.  The two races he SHOULD have been in he WASN'T. Because he KNEW he COULDN'T win them.  And it's the cowardly way out: to pick and choose races based on what you KNOW you can win.

He never raced the 50m or 400m freestyle.  Why? I will tell you why. THe 50m is for the fastest swimmer on the planet, which is NOT Michael Phelps. The 400m is a test of endurance, which Phelps DOESN'T have much of.  He didnt want to be embarrassed but rather make embarrassments of others by crushing them in the pool.  And while he was out there winning all those golds, he was complaining about goggles? Oh my freakin' gosh. Get over it Phelps!

I don't care what people say about how he wins. I have heard about his 9,000 calorie breakfast he eats, and then he burns it all off. That's a load of crap because if he ate all those eggs like they say he does, he would get fatigued easily. So the food is NOT why he is winning the races.  Others have also said it's because he listens to music before he swims and the music causes the brain to send motion signals to the rest of the body. Guess what? SO DOES EVERYBODY ELSE!! And that includes the past 4 Olymipcs!!!  So again, it's not that.  Is it his physical specimen?  Maybe.  He is cut, he is chiseled.  But he is NOT superhuman. Scientists haven't been able to create the genetic superhuman yet.

So what does Michael Phelps use to win?  One word: Drugs.  Did you know he has NEVER been tested for doping randomly? He has always been informed when he was going to get tested, or he wouldnt be tested at all.  Even a dope can figure out that Phelps is doping. Give him a random drug test and those 8 gold medals go to the true and proper winners.  Everyone is concerned about baseball and football and WWE (fake as it is), and yet they praise a guy who is doing the same thing? Typical America: hypocritical. But before I go into politics and veer off in that direction let me say one thing: once it is found out that Phelps IS a doper, I will probably be the only one in Ameirca not shocked and the only one saying "I told you so."

In closing, do we praise his accomplishments or do we implicate him in doping?  He had 17 races in 9 days in Beijing, including heats, trials, and finals, and not once, not once was he randomly tested.  They will test him now that all his races are over and he doesn't need the drugs, so he will come up clean.  If only one person could be creative enough to test him randomly in between his busy schedule, then the fraud would be exposed.

And if he DID gain the medals cleanly, then he is the greatest siwmmer ever, but until he is drug tested properly, I have my doubts.

As it stands, it is sickening and disgusting to see this display from Phelps knowing these facts about his drug testing regimen. And America embracing him as Boy Wonder? Pathetic.

Great blog.

Michael Phelps did REALLY well these Olympics.

August 18, 2008  02:38 PM ET

Gonets...wow. This is insane.

August 18, 2008  02:42 PM ET

I agreed with you until the part about drugs. I am with Ram, in the sense that I think that is ridiculous.

August 18, 2008  02:43 PM ET

Absurd.

August 18, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Gonets he is tested immediately after every race. That's much more likely to catch someone doping than random testing is.

August 18, 2008  02:48 PM ET

gonets, you think that racing in 10 event's MAY be overkill? He would never give up those other 8, and you know that he knows that he can win those other two. Phelps may have won a few events by the skin of his teeth, but 8 golds should tell you he's able to win those events.

August 18, 2008  02:49 PM ET

Oh mylanta. Wow. Gonets, my friend, I maybe agreed with 3 words you said and they include "the" and "and."

August 18, 2008  02:57 PM ET

This is ludicrous. Drugs? Are you kidding me? An athlete of his stature is tested frequently (maybe not randomly) which includes after EVERY single race. There is no way in hell he dopes.

Dyhard, have you lost it as well?

August 18, 2008  03:02 PM ET

Lets just say that Phelps doped prior to the Olympics. His sport is not one that you can bulk up for and then stop using. He'd have to keep using, and with the nature of his sport, it would likely involve the use of drugs that increase red blood cell production exponentially. Those must be taken right around competition time.

Now, with the Olympics, it is no joke. This isn't American sports here, where you can't test for HGH and the players unions are so strong they can just push you out. They test there, and they test ALOT. They have banned a few athletes so far this year, and don't think they aren't testing Phelps frequently.

Hm... gonets I completely disagree with this and I agree with everyone in the comments...

August 18, 2008  03:07 PM ET

Bad timing for this blog. The least you could have done is provided ONE link substantiating your claims. Without them this is just a bunch of personal hot air.

I agree with Cas...woah, I'm agreeing with Cassidy for once. haha

Dan is also right. Having chlorine in your eyes isn't fun.

I will take Gonets side. Not in terms of the Phelps bashing but on the Doping. If you look at Shawn Johnson and tell me shes not as doped up as Barry Bonds you are simply able to lie to yourself and honestly believe it. There is probably no athlete competing besides Table tennis and Shooting that isnt on steroids in the summer olympics.

However; its not everyones fault that they attack Gonads on this. For some reason we need an American hero. So instead of our fathers and grandfathers we take some speach slurring elephant boy who can swim fast. Why is this???? I dont really know but its enough reason for the people in charge to spend much time and money in an effort to have undetected steroids.

Steroids work like Radar Detectors in cars, the bad guys are always 1 step ahead of those trying to catch them. To pull a Merriman or Harrison and fail, you are simply pushing the envelope, but all can do illegal performance enhancing drugs then take another shot to have it clear of the blood in the next hour.

August 18, 2008  03:31 PM ET

gonets I completely and utterly disagree with you. Like everyone else said what he did is incredibly difficult. The fact that you think that he would have been able to drugs is completely ignorant. He would be unable to take drugs because he's tested after every single race..and those drugs are in your body for a long period of time...it would be noticeable if he was taking drugs. This is just..complete stupidity.

I expected you to take this angle Frank.

But I'm not 'grasping for straws' when I'm of the belief that Phelps is clean. Nor am I doing so when I think the IOC would have taken his arse to the cleaners should they have found him doping. It's preposterous that they would actually give him beneficial testing, as he's not only attained one of the most coveted Olympic milestones, but he's American at that.

I don't need an American hero, and nor do many others. Doping IS a part of the Olympics, evidenced by the fact that there HAVE been people found doping in THIS Olympics. But to use that as carte blanche to blanket a successful athlete in some scheme is inappropriate and is essentially self-righteous pontificating on an issue many of us have no real experience with.

August 18, 2008  03:52 PM ET

mostly agreed moon, but dont you think that there is something in the legs, arms, and shoulders of 16 yr old Shawn Johnson besides Tofu and excercise? To see her any other way is preposterous to me.

Those who do get busted are those who push the envelope, go overboard.

That to me is what sucks about being an American sports fan..that is the perfect example of the jaded sports fan. We can't even take an accomplishment and think there's nothing wrong with it. The steroids era in American sports has hurt us all..especially when seeing an amazing accomplishment in the Olympics

the fact is you can be blind or see it for what it is, i dont view it as tarnished at all. He did it against his competition who were also all on illegal drugs. Its not Phelps that dissapoints me, its the entire bunch b/c I would like to know how fast a human can really swim or run. We cant judge that now its all about how fast you can do it with the drugs available that you can beat on the test.

8 for 8 is damned good. What the heck are you on about. He did what he wanted to do and not what you thought he should do? 8 for 8, looks like he made the right choices to me.
Show any evidence than your conjecture on the drugs issue.
