I think nearly everyone, at some point, gets really down about the way things are going for them. Now, for instance, instead of looking forward to squeezing in a few more days at the beach this summer, I'm hunkered down on the couch, resting a broken foot. Not only am I missing out on what should be some of the best days of summer, I don't even have a good story to explain the injury (running with the bulls? poledancing? climbing a mountain range in South America?) In times like these, I need a little-pick-me-up. Thank goodness for college football.
Yes, the summer's winding down, but with the beginning of fall, we also get the beginning of football. I'd almost call it an even trade. Besides giving me something to think about as I'm lounging around, and plenty of things to watch on tv (games, SportsCenter, College Football Live, etc.) while I can't be out and about, it also helps me put things in perspective. I have a fracture in my foot and I have to stay off it for a few weeks. It's a pain in the rear but it could be much worse.
It could be broken like Ben Olson's foot, which required surgery and means that, after God knows how many seasons, the senior still won't be behind center for UCLA, at least not to start the season. It could be a knee or shoulder injury that would keep me out of the mess of things for the length of the season, or longer, but it's not.
It could be an injury that's mental or emotional, rather than physical, like senior Jordan Steffy getting the starting QB over Chris Turner, who led the team much of last year. (Yes, I know it was a tough decision and they had to go with the one they thought would help them win, etc., etc. I understand all that, and I know I'm a big CT fan and therefore biased and maybe he's not too terribly torn up about it. But I'm hearing transfer rumors and man, Ralph Friedgen, if that's what happens, I will Freak Out.)
Watching college football or, at this point, just watching the shows to get ready for college football, definitely puts things in perspective. I might be out of the gym for awhile, but at least I don't have any nasty USC jock itch. I just have a really good excuse to camp out on the couch all day each Saturday this fall. Now that's something to be glad about.
