A little disrespect goes a long way for a person's motivation.
I read about the idea of LSU being disrespected from LSU's blog. (I've also read about it before b/c Stewart Mandel used to get a lot of angry e-mails from LSU fans swearing up and down that he hates them. I didn't like Stew that much at first, but I've come around to like him much more now.) I can't help but feel the same way about UGA after watching the college gameday preseason show.

I watched the College Gameday on ESPN at 11am ET this morning. That was actually the exact time I rolled out of bed, a little late if you ask me, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it. All three announcers: Kirk, Lee, and Lou, gave their picks for the conference winners and the national title. Not a one picked UGA to win the SEC much less the national title. Lou cited the fact that the #1 preseason team has only remained #1 the entire season 2 times in about 50 years. Ok, so what about finishing the season at #1? That's how stats are manipulated. So UGA is ranked #1, but few believe they can stay #1. I feel like my team is being a bit disrespected at the moment, but they have good reasons for believing that I suppose. I just hope UGA takes that disbelief and turns it into motivation. You better keep them motivated Richt! I'll do my part by being loud at games.
My question to you: who is the most disrespected team in the nation? Also, who is the most overlooked team in the nation?
Texas is the most overlooked team in the nation b/c when I hear about the Big 12, I always hear about Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and even Texas Tech is getting in on the attention. Texas is being left out of the talk even though they are ranked #11. I tend to think that Colt McCoy had a bit of a sophomore slump, but he'll be back and better in '08.

I try to stay objective with the matters of "disrespect" b/c I know it is easy to feel like one's team is getting the cold shoulder. Does anyone else notice Mark May's distaste for UGA though? Cause I've been patient in noticing this, but there's definitely something there. His Pitt team got left out of the national title game in '80, and I think he still harbors ill feelings for UGA, the 1980 national title winner. Why is he an analyst anyways? He was a freaking big ugly on the offensive line in college. His coach said,"Hey Mark! Block this guy." And he replied, "OK coach." Not too complex and it doesn't require a great football mind. At least Jesse Palmer and Kirk Herbstreit were QB's who had to know defenses and cover schemes, and being pretty doesn't hurt their TV persona either. Corso and Holtz were coaches, and even Desmond Howard won a Heisman as a return man and WR, but Desmond is the fun correspondent who doesn't make the serious analysis. Mark May is definitely the odd man out. What are your opinions of May?
That's right; I just made an ad hominem attack! Wanna fight about it?
I must say that having Mark May, Jesse Palmer (former UF QB), Lou Holtz (former USC coach), and Erin Andrews (former UF dancer) doesn't make ESPN the friendliest of places for UGA, but I enjoy Lou's slurred analysis. He's good at staying objective and making believable predictions. Jesse's is alright; he stays pretty objective, but it's not the greatest analysis. That and being on the Bachelor doesn't help his rep. Erin is just mindless eye candy, so UGA's situation isn't as bad as it seems at first glance.

I do agree, about Texas being overlooked. Colt McCoy has two years of starting experience under his belt and he's only a junior, they cannot be underestimated.
Lou Holtz needs to die already, he predicted ND to have 11 wins this year.... 11!!!!!!

Heheh, he is definitely a Notre Dame homer. I pick them to have 8 wins at most.

May is ok but I like September a whole lot more. Georgia's second game is against Central Michigan, a team that is considered the best in the MAC. I know that's not saying much on the national level but supposedly they have a high powered offense [so did Hawaii] and I'm curious to see if they can show better than Hawaii did against Ga. last season.

Good blog. It really is disappointing just homer-ish Lou Holtz is, at least try to hide your love for Notre Dame a little bit please. I agree about Texas always being overlooked, but I'm gonna go with the "homer" pick and say Wisconsin gets constantly overlooked especially by Lee Corso. There's actually a story about it in Barry Alvarez' autobiography..good stuff. Nevertheless I dont mind Mark May...every now and then he makes some pretty outlandish predictions..but I respect his college football opinions.

Texas is being overlooked for a good reason, while the offense will be solid the D needs all the 5* prospects to play to their potential, I think a 9-3 season.

Mark May is solid, especially in comparison to others...
I don't think Georgia has been disrespected. I think the consensus is that they're at least a top 3 team, #1 in my opinion. The only problem is their ridiculous schedule.
I think that everybody is a homer, it just depends on the level of you homerosity. The first thing everyone does when they see new college football rankings is look for their team. Everybody thinks about their guys and thinks their guys deserve more publicity than they get. It's only natural when their are 100+ D1-A teams.
I agree that Texas is being overlooked. Colt McCoy, especially, is being overlooked in favor of Chase Daniel and Graham Harrell.

Most overlooked - I would have said UGa before they hit the top portion of the polls last year. Reason - only 5 of their 14 games against the other major conferences came against a team other than the ACC. Of those, 1 was a loss, 2 were against teams that finished in the bottom 1/3 of their cconference. Unless you play the teams from the other major conferences, it's get hard to get noticed.
Now I would say Wisconsin. over the last 6 years they are 10-3 against the other major cconferences. 6 of the wins came when they finished lower or about the same in the Big 10 as their opponent finished in their conference (if you equate 3rd and 4th in the Big 10 to a div 2nd, etc,) The 3 losse were conference 4th against Conf 2nd Tenn by 4, conf 4th against div 2nd Auburn, and conf 3rd against div 2nd UGa by 3. reason - they find new an imaginative ways to muck up their conference season, and their offense just isn't sexy enough for prime time.

There's a reasson they call them sportcasters and sports writers and not journalists.
The next time you listen ask yourself if this report sounds worthy of a reporter with a staff. The next time you read ask yourself if this eads like someone who spent 8 hours drafting an article.

I am just going to come out and say that, yes, I am being homer. But Maryland is very overlooked and disrespected. Even when they are good they don't get talked about. Not even a mention on Gameday. Not even the UVA MD game had one mention on Gameday or CFN

You put Lou Holtz as a USC head coach. I thought he was Notre Dame? Great blog, and I agree with Texas being overlooked. I hate Mark May, even though he seems to love Tennessee.

Both teams should be disrespected, LSU is coming of the title and should be experiencing some setbacks, UGA has like half its team suspended

Wisconsin and Maryland are good picks for being disrespected/overlooked.
Undefeated, that makes me feel a little bit better to know that my distaste for Mark May is not based completely in homer roots.

The latest report I've heard on the ranking in the Big 10 had Wisconsin as the number 2 seed. That doesn't sound like too much disrespect. Penn State should be the ones pissed. They were picked to be 4th in that conference.

I think Tennessee is being overlooked by people who follow or report on the SEC. Before you say homer pick you would be wrong. I just live in Knoxville, I am in no way a Tennessee fan.

Yeah Lou coached at ND, that is why he loves them so much. A former USC coach wouldn't love one of their rivals! Anyways I don't think that Mark May is completely terrible, besides the fact that he has a USC fetish. I wouldn't worry too much about not feeling like your team is not getting any "love" by the media. Really it is just hype. Let them hype an LSU team who's quarterback is a transfer from HARVARD?!? I don't mind Texas not getting "respect" from ESPN, they can be up TT butt all they want; they still wont win against us (as usual). Anyone else remember Kirk Herbstreit selling the crap out of Cal last 2 seasons? What happened to them last season? Bottom line, they don't know what they are talking about and they just love making sexy picks.

This is true UTbb3.
Penn St. and Tennessee are definitely good picks for being overlooked. Penn St. has to prove to me that they can beat Michigan and Ohio State before I jump on their bandwagon. I also think many people are keeping their eye on Tennessee also. I've seen many predict that Tenn. will beat Georgia.

Can't anyone win a game any more without using the disrespect motivation. Tenn is going to be good and probably close to as good as Georgia. It depends on who and how long Georgia's players will sit down.

I'm not so sure about the pick of Texas as overlooked/underrated. True, McCoy suffered behind a young offensive line last year, but Jamaal Charles would not have been as high a draft choice as he was if the line were that bad. I think that without him, Colt will struggle. Even through his great freshman campaign in which everyone decided he was the passing version of Vince Young, he always seemed a little vulnerable. Texas as a team has struggled against Kansas State of late, and KSU is nowhere near the top of the Big 12 like they were with Sproles and co. in the early 2000s. If that trend of losing to the lower tier continues this year (though they don't play KSU), they better look out: they play an OU team that I think may be the best in the country by the time all is said and done, as well as TTech and Kansas away and they get Missouri at home. Not to mention they have to travel to Colorado to face a team that I think may surprise some. Altogether, they face a tough task this season, and I'm not sure they have a chance to win their own half of the conference with the way OU looks on paper. Unfortunately for Texas, their past successes have created a scenario in which Kansas and Missouri are more intriguing and can do less and still become great stories, while anything short of a victory over OU and a south or Big 12 title will keep Texas off the national radar. I agree that Penn State is a team that's been overlooked, as they have proven themselves to have a great offense (after all, they should...they're only a few years removed from that '05 juggernaut, and still have those dynamic receivers that were freshman phenoms on the receiving end of Michael Robinson's throws that year) and the defense at Linebacker U never seems to fall too hard. I also think Nebraska is going to be a lot better a lot quicker than people think, and though I am excited to go to my first game at THE memorial stadium this year to see my Hawks play the Huskers, I'm afraid the result may not be too good. Joe Ganz showed against us in the blowout last year that he has potential to be a great QB, and I really like Bo Pelini. If he can turn that D around quick, they may hand some teams (I'm looking at you, Missouri) some deastating losses.
