Well, I ate my words. They tasted bitter, just like they did back in March when the Heels decided, "Hey, going to another Final Four is too easy! Let's completely forget everything that we've ever been taught and we'll elt Gerogetown win!" Similar to that, my Heels decided that in baseball, not showing up was the better option.
Maybe I was an overconfidant Tar Heel fan (that I conviently pointed out in my last blog). But as fans, we become overconfidant in our teams - that's just fact. Kind of similar to the way Jon Kitna is proclaiming the Detroit Lions to be winners of 10 plus games, we proudly boast of our teams upcoming dominance and victory as if it was that easy. If it was that easy, my friend Moose wouldn't need to switch between the Phillies and the Tigers as teams he roots for so often (Nobody here will get that, but I'll get major points from my pals at OO). The fact is, as fans, we are pre-disposed to believing that our team is unstoppable. A majority of fans will side with their team before they go agaisnt them. Most fans have positive outlooks on their teams - Cleveland fans not included. That's why the compairson I'm about to make is a tough one. It means I have to be negative about MY teams. And honestly, it's not something I like doing, but it's the truth.
The Tar Heels in the College World Series Finals looked a lot like my Atlanta Braves.
Neither team can get a hit when needed. Neither team has any sort of clutch power - in fact, they are decidingly worse when there are runners in scoring poisition. They have some of the best talent in the world. They're better than what they show to the world. Unfortunetly, my Heels are doing the one thing the Braves are famous for - getting to the big game...and then choking.
The Heels had a heck of a season - they have nothing to be ashamed of. They were a great team and they just happen to be playing the one team that couldn't be beat. But I am praying that this doesn't become commonplace. I've heard too much about the Braves 15 Division Titles, but only the one World Series. 10 years from now, the one thing I fear is hearing 12 straight CWS appearances - with no titles to show for it.
The accomplishment is good. But without the titles, in the eyes of history, it's only a footnote.
As a fan, I can only hope that when it comes to history, both the Braves and the Heels will be talked about only in the highest praise. But in order for that to happen, they need to get rid of their worst trait - underacheivement.
