Week one of the 2008 college football season starts tomorrow, followed by a full slate of games this weekend. There are a number of high profile games this weekend, including the Illinois-Missouri game. While that game shapes up to be very exciting, from an investing perspective it is not a worthwhile game with Missouri currently favored by 9. Here are the picks for Week one that have a strong spread discrepancy:

Michigan State @ Cal - Michigan State +5.0
Spread discrepancy: 5.0
The Spartans bring a prolific offense to Berkeley to face an unsure and talent depleted Cal team. A question mark for the Spartans is their defense, but they should be able to hold up. Go with Michigan State getting 5 points or as a moneyline as it is likely they will travel East with a win.

Clemson vs. Alabama - Clemson -4.5
Spread discrepancy: 2.5
A young Alabama team will be unable to keep up with the explosive Tigers offense. Cullen Harper was one of the most efficient QB’s in the nation this year and will look to build on his 2007 season in the opener. He has plenty of weapons at WR with Tyler Grisham and Aaron Kelly leading the way, and at running back with CJ Spiller and James Davis. The Clemson defense is underrated, led by Thorpe Candidate Michael Hamlin.

Fresno State @ Rutgers - Rutgers -5.5
Spread discrepancy: 1.5
Even with the loss of Ray Rice, Rutgers will be in contention for the Big East title all season. While Fresno State is being touted as this years WAC BCS buster, they are in for a tough time when they travel east. Rutgers still has plenty of returning talent on defense, so look for the Scarlet Knights to cover.
