One of the more interesting tidits, as I expected months ago as a USC Trojans football fan, has come up. The unhappy kid who takes his toys and leaves the sandbox when things don't go his way will now be on watch perhaps for team disruption, just like the coup he and others pulled off at Arkansas two seasons ago with Houston Nutt. That's right folks, it appears Arkansas transfer Mitch Mustain isn't exactly having the experince he hoped for at Southern Cal at the moment. Not only has Mark Sanchez has beaten out Mustain for the starting quarterback job, so too has freshman Aaron Corp apparently. That means Mitch Mustian, the starter at Arkansas as a freshman who went on an 8-0 tear against SEC teams in 2006 at one point (but got lambasted by USC in the season opener) is now officially the guy who will touch more clip boards at game time than footballs, wear more visors to ward off the sun than helmets to protect from Pac-10 defensive linemen.
According to LA Daily News' Scott Wolf in a blog post tonight (Wednesday), Mustain "did not appear too happy over his newfound status as the No. 3 quarterback."
My favorite part of Wolf's blog is about how Wolf apparently asked Mustain if he has called Tulsa Offensive coordinator/2006 Arkansas co-conspirator with Mustain, Gus Malzahn. Wolf also asked Mitch if he had spent time on the scout team this week. Ooohhhh... that's funny. I knew I liked Scott Wolf!
You'll likely do not remember, but I wrote a blog post over a year ago here warning all USC fans about this. I did not think it was a good thing for the Trojans to have this kid come to town. He has shown already how poorly he takes things that do not go his way, as many Razorback fans may agree with here. While Mustain does wear the Trojan uniform now, which means I do root for him if he sees the field ever, my stronger feeling here is one of trepidation. How will he handle this scenario. No way did Mustain leave Arkansas, transfer to USC, sit out a year to be third-string behind the leader of 2008 and the future of the program in Corp.
Hopefully nothing negative comes of this. No distractions. Here's hoping Mustain does another great job warming the SC defense all week with the looks of that week's opponents, and holds the clipboard tight on the sideline on game day. And maybe has success when put in a game during garbage time.
But as a USC fan, who followed closely the mess at Arkansas in 2006, I cannot help but ask, What will Mitch do next?
GO TROJANS!!! Fight on!!!!

Mustain LOST the starting job at Arkansas to Casey Dick. I'm sure he wishes he had transferred to Tulsa instead.
