So what will work best for Colorado against in-state rival Colorado State in the two program's season opener? Will it be the ground game with much-improved talent and depth or will quarterback Cody Hawkins Fed-Ex packages all over Invesco Field to his receivers?

MX says it's going to be the combo platter that gets it done offensively for the Buffs, with the Rams expecting run and CU working short patterns and slants hoping that the pass catchers can break tackles for long gains. Then the Buffs will supplement that with the ground game, trying to pound on the Rams until the breakaway runs start popping. When all this gets warmed up look for the deep pass. It should be a clinic by game's end. The Buffs will surely take some punches in the mouth along the way as the Rams would love to shame CU but the feeling keeps growing that the Buffs are going to light up the scoreboard.

Defensively, the question is how good will CU be? If the Buffs score 40-50 and win everyone will be happy but if the defenders give up 30, wise men of Buff Nation should feel sick to their stomach because it will be a harbinger of things to come this season against far better personnel.

Special teams will be an interesting play to watch as well. The Buffs are getting enough high-level skill talent on the roster that returns, with quality blocking, should start being dangerous again. Defending the return game is the mystery that needs revealed.
