Now that Orton has been named the starter at Chicago, everything is good, right? All of our fans that have been boo-ing Rex Grossman over the past year and a half and calling for Kyle Orton are going to be happy, finally... right?
No chance... While Orton may not become the greatest QB in history, or even the greatest QB in Bears history, or even the greatest QB on the Bears at this present moment, he can and will (if the boo-birds stay away) do a manageable job of the starting offense.
The problem with the Chicago Bears fans (from my experience) is that a lot of them will turn on a player in heartbeat at the first sign of a that player having a bad day. Rex had some bad games last year, a point we can all agree on I am sure, but could he have turned the page in those games if he didn't have to hear the collective jeering from 66,000 of his own local "fans".
Almost any QB in the league will struggle that has to constantly endure the pressure of the Chicago media and it's sometimes 'loving' fans. Not only did Rex have some (although minimal) good games last year, he also had an aging OL that couldn't block and receivers that couldn't catch a cold bare naked in Alaska. Not making (too many) excuses for the guy, but he still stood up after every game and said that he could have played better and that he was going to go back and work harder. He almost always held his head up when the fans turned on him and started calling for an unproven commodity.
And now what happens when Orton starts faltering. When he can't seem to get footing because 330 lb defensive linemen and linebackers are busting through a make-shift offensive line. When receivers begin to drop easily catchable wide open passes on 3rd and 7. Out come the re-emergence of the boo-birds, they will come to life and begin their quest to for yet another unproven commodity in Caleb Hanie. Hanie has had a great pre-season and fans need to realize he is not ready (yet) to lead our offense.
Even though Orton was the QB the fans wanted, he will be susceptible to the crowing of the media and our fans. We need to give our QB a chance and let him get his feet wet. While you may say, Rex had his chance, boo-ing any player does not help their confidence and get them to play better.
Just my opinion, but fans should NEVER boo their team or their players - positive re-enforcement anyone... anyone?
