 Carlos Quentin

Josh Hamilton

What should happen:

1. Carlos Quentin
2. Grady Sizemore
3. Kevin Youkilis
4. Jermaine Dye
5. Aubrey Huff

What will happen:

1. Josh Hamilton
2. Carlos Quentin
3. Alex Rodriguez
4. Kevin Youkilis
5. Grady Sizemore

What would happen if Hamilton was black:

1. Carlos Quentin
2. Alex Rodriguez
3. Kevin Youkilis
4. Grady Sizemore
5. Jermaine Dye

Hamilton will win because everyone likes a story, except me apparently.  I don't think he should win because his numbers are definitely inferior to everyone else on my top 5 list.

If Hamilton were black, the media would not have approached this story the same way.  Instead of "a good guy that got caught up in some bad things", you'd have "a drug addict that let his addiction get in between him and a promsising baseball career."  Instead of hearing "he's found God and has beaten his addiction", you'd hear "he says he's found God and has not tested positive for narcotics."  The story wouldn't be nearly as embraceable and he would be judged on his numbers, which aren't good enough.

Alex Rodriguez will still get votes for his numbers, although he is the antithesis of clutch.

I agree Pitt, the hype of Hamilton will win him the MVP, also because voters are idiots, unless they are given an obvious choice like last year.

If Hamilton wins, then this is just another reason to doubt the writers have any intelligence.

I'm not voting for a guy that got himself involved in drugs and then went to rehab and got better. It's a nice story, but he gets no credit for his drug use, just because he's better now.

The numbers point to Carlos Quentin....................

August 29, 2008  09:35 PM ET

Lol, I would agree, Pitt.

Ahh, ahhh, JUSTIN MORNEAU, choo! Sorry, had to sneeze.

August 29, 2008  10:42 PM ET

I agree with all three of your lists, Pitt Panther.

But I still have to ask you: If you are so good at detecting racial bias surrounding MVP picks, why do always go around saying that Barry Bonds is 100% guilty and Roger Clemens is 100% innocent of juicing?

August 29, 2008  11:31 PM ET

I'm not sure what you're referring to Yoda. I say they both used steroids.

*What word did you forget to put here?

August 30, 2008  12:28 AM ET

I guess I forgot to put the word, 'joking' up there.

I know you think they are both 100% innocent.

Justin Morneau should be in the top 5, avreage of .313, #2 in RBI's with 104 behind Hamilton.

August 30, 2008  01:04 PM ET

Morneau is close. He's more deserving than Hamilton, but I think Huff still has a slight advantage.

If Hamilton wins the MVP an official investigation by the state department needs to occur. I'm serious. I'd insist my congressman make this happen. And trust me, I'm annoying enough he'd eventually do it. ;-)

Seriously, Hamilton has zero chance. He was a nice story in the first half of the season, but he's done virtually nothing since the A.S. break and he plays for an also ran who was out of it months ago.

If Quentin continues his season long pace, he won't be denied. If he slumps, all bets are off.

The more important question is Rookie of the year!

ALEXEI RAMIREZ!

I don't buy your "if he were black" argument at all, BTW. To presuppose race has anything to do with something as benign as an MVP award is ridiculous in this day and age. Do you attend the same church as Barrack Obama? Or are you a disciple of Jesse Jackson? Maybe the opposite. David Duke fan club member?

Can we PLEASE stop playing the race card in sports? Sports transcended race LONG before society did.

Also, the "If he was black" list is inaccurate, brcause he put Jermaine Dye on that list, and Dye is black

September 2, 2008  01:28 PM ET

It's not just because he would be black, it's because he would be black and a recovering drug addict. To the best of my knowledge, Dye is not a recovering drug addict.
