One and two are probably obvious to you if you, well, have a passing knowledge of football. After that it's pretty subjective, so here's the criteria I'm using (in no particular order or weight): value to team, youth, contract, and potential/upside. By value to team, I mean how many fewer games the team would win if an average player replaced him. I also went for a diversity of positions, so there wouldn't be 6 QBs here. Anyways here it is. Oh, and please let me know how stupid I am through the comments.

I think Ed Reed should be in there before Bob Sanders

I was thinking Ed Reed, but he's on a D full of playmakers. Bob Sanders essentially IS that run defense.

Your list includes some credible entries...however, several players that are much more important to the fortunes of their franchises are notably absent....
1.Ben Roesthleberger
2.LaDamian Tomlinson
I would also suggest, that, if injuries had not hindered him the past year or so, Troy Polamalu knocks both Reed and Sanders from the top SS spot. It should be interesting to see if he is back to 100% this year, and if so, he becomes one of your so called "10 Best Period" players......
Just some food for thought......nice post otherwise.

I was going for a diversity of positions. Otherwise, there would likely be 5 QBs on the list.

Randy Moss quit in Oakland. Imagine if a lot of receivers had a Hall of Fame qb how good they could be. Terrible argument. What if he could have a HOF qb, HOF wr (Chris Carter) all the time, just think how good he'd be.
Not having LT is a joke. The best rbin the league for five years,
