Huh?

That might be what your reaction was when you saw the cuts the packers made.  And some of them that they didn't make.  The pack cut 2 veteran running backs, this after cutting DeShawn wynn last week.  Then they signed one of the 3 to the practice squad.  They did not sign Morency or Herron.  It was Wynn.  Why?  Not sure.  I can only speculate.  It really seems that Thompson, like most other GMs, likes guys that he drafted, as opposed to the better players.  All 3 RBs on the roster and the one on the practice squad where drafted or picked up by Thompson.  I'm not sure why Thompson likes guys who can't stay healthy so much.  It's like he loves damaged goods.  I'd hate to see his wife.

Case in point: Junius Coston and Justin Harrell.  Both are out for the season.  Both spend more time on IR last year than on field.  Both could have been cut but remain packers.  KGB is injured again but remains on the roster.

Now.  With so many teams dropping guys it would stand to reason that the Packers would pick up some guys who could really help this team.  John Lynch?  Chris Simms?  Any defensive players?

So who are the Packers looking at?  Derrick Frost.  A punter.  Thompson you strange silly sonovabitch.  Thompson likes to work with guys that he drafted and you could go as far as to say the guy just about hates free agents.  The past 2 years only 1 player a year has been picked up by the pack in free agency.  A few are picked up on waivers but mainly its the draft.  When you have an opportunity to pick up a guy like Jason Taylor or a Randy Moss, you at least try.  They talked to Daunte Culpepper before the draft.  Whoopty do.  John Lynch on the pack would be great.  Hell anyone at DT would be better than our current players.  Chances are the current roster that the pack have on there website will probably stay the same.

Unless Frost can beat out Ryan for the starting job.  Which would be like watching to asthmatic computer jockies foot racing each other.

Morency and Herron were also brought in by TT. Lynch got cut for a reason, he is old and slowing drastically as he is appearantly not even fast or rangy enough to play a situational linebacker any more. Simms has possibillities but like any other veteran QB you would be giving up on Flynn way too early as he nor Brohm would clear waivers to go on the practice squad. Also carrying 4 QB's would be worse than Sherman carrying 2 punters. While KGB is not a TT guy and is being given the benefit of the doubt you can look at most if not all of TT's moves in wich his draft picks are favored the only real common theme is that the younger player wins, not the draft pick. Guys like Lee, Grant, Poppinga, Busch, and Muir were examples of this in past years, and this year Morency and Herron after benefiting last season also got passed over for the younger player.

Going for the younger players is great - if you want to build a winning team in 3 to 5 years....... Thompson does not play free agency well, yet claims to base his moves on 'business' decisions. I'm not convinced that we don't need a younger man as GM to help the Packers build the management squad required to 'move on' to a more winning attitude.

I'm not going to make a habit of defending TT because nobody in his position really needs it, but wether you noticed or not he turned an aging group of fading starts into a contender in about 2 seasons and that's if you consider an 8-8 season with a first year head coach a failure. Younger or new wave ideas are not always better. Over the past 15 yrs. free agency has proven to be a useful tool to fill one or two spots a year with special players (Woodson, Pickett in GB, Deion wherever he went before he got old, among others). The problem is that while it can be a ton of fun for the fans using free agency more and more frequently usually doesn't make you much better than you alreaday are as 10 years of watching the Viqueens, Redskins, and even the Cowboys (who may just win their first playoff game since the mid 90's this year) are plenty of proof of. As Ron Wolf said after the first couple seasons of free agency there is always a reason why a player was allowed to leave the original team. Once again I'm not going to try to defend TT, but the strategy seems to have worked so far. If anything would make me want to change our GM it would be handling of our own veterans. There has to be a reason Mike Wahle, A. Green, D. Sharper, R. Longwell, and B. Favre were either sour when they left or didn't even give the Pack a shot to match the offer they recieved.

So while I would say 10 or 12 rookies every year would eventually catch up to him it does allow TT and MM to treat every player on the team the same way. That is a big part of what works for the Patsies. They are doing it with veterans (only a couple a year), but the attitude of Teddy Bruschi is much more about the TEAM than any of the guys TT has gotten rid of or allowed to leave including the guy who had his own private locker room.

Herron and Morency played in too many games to be put on practice squad.
Im not positive on the # of games that is 8 or 10,but wynn was hurt so much last year he didnt hit that number.

To be eligible for the practice squad, a player must not have been on the 45-man game-day roster for nine or more regular-season games. Wynn, active for seven games last season, thus was eligible.
