God, I love this man. I love CW as some refer to him for the father that he is to Hannah and Charlie Jr( you can see him on the sidelines on gameday), for the principles that he has(remember "pass right"?) but also for the organization that he represents. I have never attended a game at Notre Dame stadium, never saw a live US college ball game. I have been a fan forever and a true fan...ask my basement!
So as the season rolls in, I hound the UND website, scour the fannation pages to get the latest rumors and subscribe to the cable package that will allow me to watch the most college football on the tube. I have a preseason too. Rivals.com will give you insights as how the team is doing on the recruiting side, building the future of the Irish story. Scout.com is also very good. And in the summer, I watch online games on NBC such as Michigan State vs ND in 1991!!! Yes, I like the Irish. But I have to say now, Charlie, come on!!!
Last night, watching coach Weis press conference of August 31 and August 8th, I was hugely disappointed. In the most recent PC(press conference), CW talked about how beefed up the offensive line has gotten in the last year. How nobody is under 300 pounds on the O-line. How Jimmy Clausen went from 194 to 215 in the offseason, yet he was frustrated that he hadn't gained more. Yes, CW made me feel really good. Last year, we were pushed around quite a bit, so this would be an exciting year. Then, I listened to the media day press conference of August 8th. OUCH!!!
Likening the ND situation to Brett Favre and the Packers, Charlie went on to tell the press that WE ARE MOVING ON! NO MORE QUESTIONS ON 07 NOBODY WILL TALK ABOUT IT, NOT THE PLAYERS, NOT THE COACHING STAFF AND IF THEY DO, THERE WON'T BE A 2ND TIME. Well that's fine and dandy isn't it???
How do you fix the future if you can't remember your past? How do you prevent the mistakes if you don't dig deep in the pain of experiences these kids had? The truth is that if the players are the right players, then the coach is at fault. Yes there were some bad calls, quite a few. But you are still there and now, you just prove to them that you learned and won't repeat say a 4th play and 8 to go against Navy and go for it instead of kicking a field goal for the win. People make mistakes, people learn and don't do the same mistakes again. I am not asking for Charlie's head! I am convinced that the situations of last year will be fixed. Weight and aggressiveness at the line was a problem, it has been solved. Charlie said himself that while being responsible for the offense, too often, he'd be caught correcting plays while the defense was on the field and not even looking at what was happening. This has been fixed as well and now Charlie won't be calling the plays. And he vowed to keep it that way the whole year, not just for 2 games as was asked by a journalist. I am just stating that if you can't assume your own mistakes, it is quite a lesson for these players.
"So what, I screwed up officer and let's say it didn't happen!" The republicans can say that FEMA did well with Katrina. The democrats can say that Lewinsky is a fine blend of Canadian Whiskey! Because - you know - it didn't happen, we're not talking about it anymore.
Charlie - you can't not talk about 07. You can not tell players that we move on and that's it. You have to equip the kids with the tools necessary to review what happened, understand the mistakes, make a huge deal of the highlights and let them grow. These are student athletes and this is as much part of their education as philosophy 101 if not more. These kids, 300 pounds kids mind you, are students first, and athletes second. This is how you deal with adversity.
Don't hide the facts. Deal with the facts. There is a great lesson in every loss. With 9 losses, you are losing a great deal of teaching.
I just realized that I still have my ND jersey and ball cap on. Litterally. I will now go change and keep this for game day agains SDSU.
