Since Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon failed pre-race car of Tomorrow inspections last Friady at Sonoma, NASCAR Nation has waited for the sport's governing body to respond. Tuesday it did, docking each driver 100 points and suspending crew chiefs Chad Knaus and Steve Letarte six races each. While Gordon maintained his points lead, Johnson fell to fifth.
So, did NASCAR act appropriately in handing down its sentences?

funny how this is even an issue. People want to hung Barry Bonds from a tree in the twon square as proof that "we are sick of cheaters" and that Barry's records are "a shame" to MLB. But we question if it is apropriate to give a slap on the wrist to guys that cheat systematically?
And for the record, I don't even like Barry Bonds.

NASCAR has written rules that crew chiefs read and make sure they follow. When a smart crew chief reads the rules and abides by the rules and THEN does something that is NOT inculded in the rules, NASCAR does one of two things - 1) ignores the crew chief enhancement or 2) issues punishment for doing something that is NOT YET in the rules ( but should have been included in the NASCAR rules from the beginning.) So teams, drivers and car owners CAN be penalized for trying innovative enhancements and the teams, drivers and car owners know the risk they take when they apply enhancements. If NASCAR would manufacture the parts that NASCAR does not want altered by a racing team (ex, the restrictor plate), then there would not be a problem with those parts, unless the NASCAR-provided parts had been altered. So let the teams, car drivers and car owners be aware!!!! If NASCAR sees something that is not in the rule book, they may put it in the rule book AFTER they fine you for being imaginative. Dan

It's not harsh in comparison to the penalties imposed on Jr.'s team for a similar incident back in May. Crew chief Tony Eury, Jr. was also suspended for six races, along with a $100,000 fine. In addition, Earnhardt was penalized 100 points, as was DEI.

Theres a difference between Bonds and Gordon & Johnson. Bonds knowingly cheated, Gordon and Johnson for the most part drive the cars that are given to them.

this is nascar at ts finest. they might as wel make the series a spec series and let ou pick a car on thursday and put the decal wrap on and race it They do not let anyone get creative. gray area is what makes racing racing. teh ones who can figure out an advantage. just give everyone the same body and motor Nascar. sheesh. its rediculous. give us a break nascar and let teh teams have some creativity. if its a blatant rule fine, but gray areas should be alowed.

jrs part was in teh rules unlike the hendrick cars. although idiots at nascar approved it at some point. DEI just didnt use teh new part. 24 & 48 were being inovative, dan is 100% correct.
als i hope 24 can still get title # 5 out of this. he was robbed # 5 by teh stupid chase a few years ago

I REALLY don't like Barry Bonds. Hendrick Motor Sports is my favorite and it hurts, but fair is fair. At least NASCAR is maintaing consistantsy. Thats more than we can say for most other professional sports.

NASCAR has made clear what the penalties are for fooling around with the COT. They are not gray. I have no sympathy for cheaters. Hendrick has no right to complain. His teams are being treated no differently than any of the others that got caught (DEI, Waltrip). NASCAR is doing the right thing and if it were up to me, I'd suspend the drivers as well. Maybe that would finally get their attention

This punishment is absolutely insane. NASCAR should have the fenders as part of the template if there going to hand down this harsh of a punishment. We have to understand that racing is a sport and every team can???t be at the top. Maybe we should create a new NFL where every team has the same size guys, same speed and a quarterback with the exact same skills. It takes a long time to build a good program in any sport and INVENTING a car that has to be exactly the same is stupid.
As for the punishment- if NASCAR wants to take some money and a few points that???s fine, but to suspend two crew chiefs for that length of time is wrong. All NASCAR is doing is covering itself for the punishment it passed down to DEI for the bracket.

Seeing how Chad K. is a repeated cheater, 48 team got off very light. For once, Nascar is trying to be consistant on the punishment - even if it's with a very heavy hand.
Overall, Nascar has jumped the shark since Sr's death. Everyone in this sport is makeing money like never before, but the sport is not the same as it was 10 or 20 years ago. Welcome to Corp. America. Few more seasons, it will be hard to tell the difference between Nascar and WWE.

Since I dont feel like reading all 10 comments about your blog, let me just give my opinion and hopefully its not a repeat of comment above.
These two cheaters got the EXACT same punishment Dale Jr. got for his modified wing-fine, 100 smackers, and loss of chief for six. Whats good for the golden boy is good for............................

I agree with all ,NASCAR is and HAS been destroying a Sport that all americans could enjoy and feel apart of.But this COT is BS...THE CARS PASSED THE TEMPLATE..YET A NASACR IDIOT RAN HIS HAND AND A PART DIDNT FEEL RIGHT..HOW CAN A HUMAN BEING FEEL A PART IF OFF.HECK BUILD 10CARS AND NONE WILL MATCH...suspending a crewchief just tells ME that NASACR not the drivers are going too say who will win a race of a tittle...he who puts the Green in the hands of the Power will win....the #20 speaks his mind(and the truth no less) and gets called-in..again a person stood up and gets slapped like he is a child..with this COT dont be so surprised seeing the major car mfg taking a different stance towards suppling cars(oops there logo's) too Nascar...COT is Nascars downfall...Frances kid is destroying middle america.....its all about Money and Power.

I'm all for a team being innovative and thinking outside the box, but the 24 and 48 went too far out of the box. According to the rule posted on Jayski, the fender was one of those parts that are now off limits (even though they fit the template). As far as the penalty is concerned - it's the same as Jr.'s team penalty so I can't complain. With the 100 point deduction and having them both start near the back of the pack Sunday and where they finished, the total point deduction is like sitting out a race. Bottom line is to accept it, move on and don't do it again.

"scorecup" you brought up a good argument...read the "rules" that they got hendrick on....they made sure rules covred those greys areas.funny how a team can do something and the boys at top hate being made too look like those Monkeys they are...the fine Jr got was on a PArt That nascar issued. He qualified with it.and was only Then they found a problem with a PART they Controlled...Nasar issues the wing in inspection and its installed there under Nascars eyes..shows U how blind they are..there destroying middle america only true sport..Those fans that say a driver should be suspened fail too see that a driver is just that a driver Given a product too drive he DOES not over-see it being built..I thk Nascar was Wrong on Both DEI and Hendrick...fines/pts ya but a crewchief..He does not build cars..Fab shop does...Waltrip tean was wrong for a fuel additive..but again driver has no control what another does.when Nascar starts messing around with cohesion it is basically destroying a company...and soon these inner-companies will seek other avenues too show there expertise(racing).I say HAVE NASCAR BUILD THE BODIES.that way it will be as tey want FULL CONTROL......

Holy Mooley folks....some folks have very vivid imaginations. This ain't rocket science and doesn't require a degree in Engineering, Political Science or Marketing. Its really quite simple, the 24 and 48 team broke the rules and admitted to it very specifically in their statement of trying to improve the aero downforce of the two cars. They got caught and hence the penalties equal to that of Jr's team when they got nailed. The disparity between the two incidents however was with Jr's violation it was an oversight. Chad Knaus admitted he was specifically trying to improve the downforce. The difference is simple...."Intent" so HMS actually got off easier. But time to move on and I can easily continue to enjoy and watch NASCAR regardless of whose on the track or not. After all, I think they field around 42 cars every race don't they?

I'M SICK OF CHEATING CHAD KNAUSS. KICK THE S.O.B. OUT OF NASCAR. They threw Michael Waltrip's Crew Chief out permanently. Mr. Creativity Knauss would cheat using the crapper. He is a repeat offender. Three and OUT should be the rule. The piece of crud cheat should have been kicked out after Daytona last year, and Johnson's win stripped.
