Relax UGA faithful. I was mad to hear of this also, but there might be some blessings in disguise for UGA.
1) UGA is still ranked #2, i.e. the other drivers seat in the BCS system. If UGA falls to #3 after being undefeated, then I'll be furious.
2) The target on UGA's back is not quite as big. There's not as much pride beating the #2 team in the nation as beating the #1 team.
3) The chip on the dawgs' shoulder will be so much bigger now. Richt will not need to dig as deep to motivate his team. Shoot, I'm getting fired up just thinking about it.
Has a team ever fallen in the rankings after winning solidly? Not to my recollection. In fact, I even did a throwdown on the subject. #2 has never passed #1 even after #1 struggled in their regular season game while #2 whooped-up the same week.
I just wonder the rationale for it. Was it becuase UGA lost Jeff Owens and Trinton Sturdivant for the season? Was it because USC beat lowly Virginia from the worst BCS conference? Was it because Georgia Southern scored 21 points, gasp, all in garbage time?
Sure Georgia Southern is a FCS team, and sure Viriginia is in a BCS conference and did well in '07. We don't know how good Viriginia will be in '08 though. Beating a mid-level team in the ACC should not count for that much more.
It's gonna be very awkward hearing the Dawgs being announced as the #2 team in the nation against Central Michigan.
I've picked OSU to beat USC for a while anyways, so what'll happen if OSU does beat USC? OSU played a FCS team too on opening weekend. UGA would be a week away from playing at ASU. They've messed it all up.
Ohio State was dropped in the AP poll, which is not an official poll that matters in the BCS, and they played a FCS team also. Is this the pollsters' way of saying, 'Don't play FCS teams!'? If that is the case, then it would've been nice to get some sort of a heads up for the fact that a team could be dropped in the rankings for scheduling and beating FCS teams.

When I read it, all I did was check the top 3 and say who cares? As long as you are in the top 3 with 2 teams that play each other you control your own destiny, which from 1st hand experience beats the heck out of hoping other teams lose.
I didn't see the vote total the 1st poll, but I suspect it was a combination of slaughtering a team from a major 6 conference and UGa injuries.
I hope it doesn't return to the point where you have to keep the starters in and slaughter lowly teams to hold your polls position.
To reward a slaughter of a team from a conference the sportswriters have been admonishing all weekend is a bit rediculous.
OSU-USC... wish I had your confidence.

Looking at the poll again, it might very well have happened anyway, with the winner of the OSU-USC game getting the lions share of the 1st place votes held by the other team.

Teams in the #1 and #2 spots control their own destiny.
Right now, all three of the top 3 teams control their own destiny b/c two of them are going to play each other, and one of them will drop out of the top three, probably.
Yeah, as long as UGA is at #2, I should be content. It's just kinda surprizing to see it happen.

How 'bout 'em...I can remember a worse instance than what you are talking about now. Remember in 2003 I think it was when Oklahoma was 1 USC 2 and LSU 3, and Oklahoma lost the Big 12 championship game but didn't drop a spot in the BCS poll and played LSU for the national championship? Yeah LSU beat Oklahoma too, but USC won out and we has a split title that year. I wouldn't worry about the AP poll since it has no bearing on the big picture. You should hope that this year isn't a repeat of last year though when it seems no one wanted to be number 2 because number 2 was getting knocked off every week just about.

That was bad. I think the same thing happened in 2001 with Nebraska.
Even though that was worse, this is still pretty bad b/c it sets a new precedent saying, "Team A can get jumped in the polls as long as Team B plays a better opponent." Which actually might be good, but doing that raises many more questions that I will not go into.
I just think they complicated the befuddled system even more.

The SEC has solidified its place in the BCS championship game for the next three years. Probably not, but its not like undefeated South Florida or one-loss Oklahoma will get the nod over one-loss Georgia or Florida.

UGA has dropped to #3 now...
They kind of looked like they struggled with the GameCocks. Which is unfortunate because it's the first conference game for UGA and the opponents will be much more difficult than that down the road.
USC ended up beating the hell out of OSU....
I was kind of with you and I thought OSU would win, but just by looking at the final results of this game you can see how horrifyingly powerful USC's team is.
Anyways, Great post, made for a very interesting read. Nice effort man.
