Upsets are a way of life; they're a given. The favorite cannot always win as numerous factors come into play as identified in an article I read last year about underdogs. Last week the two most notable upsets came when East Carolina knocked off #17 Virginia Tech and Bowling Green won @ #25 Pittsburgh. While both programs have had success in the past few years as both played in bowl games last season, both look to continue last week's success in Week #2 of the 2008 college football season.
While not an actual underdog, Bowling Green hosts Minnesota and is a 6 point favorite. With last week's win, BG got their 10th win over a BCS conference team (4th highest total) and jumped to #34 in votes i nthe AP Top 25 and 43rd in the Cocahes Poll. Nick Gerogosian of VanDelay Sports sees BG getting yet another win over a BCS conference team in his weekly MAC football picks.
Meanwhile, East Carolina's win over Virginia Tech got the Pirates a lot of recognition as ECU is 27th in the AP and 28th in the Coaches Poll. Today ECU faces #8 West Virginia just one week after WVU QB Pat White threw for a career high 5 TD.
Both matchups should be good ones and Bowling Green and East Carolina look to shock the nation once again in Week #2. Enjoy theday of college football and the NFL which gets going for everyone tomorrow.
