A lot of news this week in cycling as the 2008 season is starting to wrap up, and the cycling world is also starting to look ahead to 2009.
Story of the Week: Lance's Comeback
Rumour's of the seven time Tour de France winner's possible comeback were first reported the NYVeloCity Blog last week, then VeloNews jumped on the story giving it more credibility. The mainstreamm media started reporting the news, then Lance himself confirmed it.
Although the details are still to be worked out, it seems like a sure thing he will ride for Team Astana. It makes me want to head to the Tour of California in February.
Vuelta Could Be Decided On Saturday
Speaking of Team Astana, they are currently contending to try and win the Vuelta Espana. Alberto Contador will be trying to make history by winning his third grand tour in just under 14 months after having won the 2007 Tour de France and the 2008 Giro.
Levi Leipheimer who is in second overall could become the first American to win the Vuelta if Condador falters. Leipheimer says he will ride for Contador who is in third, but in reality the legs will decide on the brutally step Angrilu climb.
Tour of Missouri
While half the peloton has been battling in Spain, the Tour of Missouri has brought some of Europe's top cyclists to the states. The Tour of Missouri is one of the top stage races in the U.S. Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavedish won the first two stages, then American Christian Vande Velde won the time trial stage and leads the overall going into the final weekend.
Team Garmin/Chipotle's Jonathan Vaughters said Vande Velde "will be a better rider than Lance" in the 2009 Tour de France.
