One of the more spirited discussions going on surrounding baseball right now is the question of who is deserving of the NL MVP. Cases are being made for a number of candidates, and even more interestingly, cases made against some potential choices. So who is your NL MVP?
Albert Pujols is the statistical king of the hill right now. He leads the league in BA/OBP/SLG, IBB, OPS+ , VORP, WARP-3, UFO sightings and Lottery winnings. And clear front runner...except that the Cardinals are going nowhere. A loser to those who insist that the MVP come from a postseason entrant.
Carlos Delgado is getting buzz. He's been one of the best hitters in the NL since July. HIs resurgence is clearly made the Mets contenders. But...can you ignore his pre-July deficiencies? And if the Mets don't make the postseason again due to a September swoon, can you lay some of the blame on games that were lost before he got hot because he wasn't? And if they don't make the playoffs, I guess he doesn't win either (see above).
Sabathia has been unconcious since joining the Brew-crew. Can you be an MVP by winning 10-11 games? I admit that he's plugged a big hole for Milwaukee, and he has shown to be worthy overall. But...he spent most of the season in the AL. Can you look past the fact that the Brewers were getting it done without him for a majority of the season? Worth consideration, but probably not the winner this year.
David Wright and Chase Utley get mentioned in the same breath. Certianly how the NL East plays out will go a long way to pumping up either of these guys. Utley started the year off hot and has been relatively mediocre by comparison since. Wright seems to go in fits and starts following up a 4-4 game with an 0-4 with 2 k's and a hit into DP. Neither one is the guy marching their team to the finish line, but they've had good years overall.
Hanley Ramirez, Aramis Ramirez, Manny Ramirez. Of the three, Aramis is a contender. Hanley falls into the Pujols trap (non-contender) and Manny into the Sabathia hole (Not there long enough).
You can make a case for Berkman. or Braun. The way I see it, the field is wide open until the end of the season.

Regardless of how the season plays out...you gotta give it to Pujols. The man's a machine. The Cardinals have a slim chance at the WildCard, though slim-to-none seems to be more accurate. The Cubs obnoxiously unexpected season, is the only reason the Astros and Cardinals aren't in it. And, there's no one who really shines on the Cubs to take the trophy.
So, Pujols it is...you can't ignore the numbers!
