The Savannah Sand Gnats in conjunction with the New York Mets have announced second baseman Greg Veloz the 2009 Sterling Award winner. The Sterling Award is given to the most valuable player in each of the Mets' minor league affiliates.
The 20 year old Veloz hit .286 in 111 games in Savannah before being promoted to high-A St. Lucie on August 10. The native of San Juan de la Maguana, DR led the team in RBI's with 52, runs-68, hits-13, doubles-25, and stolen bases-28. He finished third on the team in home runs with six and walks with 32.
STAYING WITH THE METS-The Savannah Sand Gnats have extended thier affilication with the New York Mets until 2010. "We are thrilled to continue our association with the New York Mets," said Sand Gnats co-owner Jason Freier. "The Mets have been great partners, on the field and in the community." The Mets have one of the most productive farm systems in the minor leagues.
