Ok before I make everyone mad I would just like to say that USC absolutely should be ranked number 1. But I have been hearing time and time again that USC is in their own league, and that no one can challenge them. I think that is the reason they are overrated. Yes they crushed Ohio State, but maybe Ohio State isn't all we thought they were going to be. They looked pretty pathetic during that game. They don't really have an established quarter back, and their best player was not on the field. Another factor I consider is that USC had TWO weeks to prepare for this game. It seems to me that they had a lot of advantages given to them which lead to their beat down. Once again, USC number 1 for sure, but definately not in their own league. There are teams that can challenge them.

If a Big 12 team (OU) win impressively against top ranked UT and a Missouri in the Conference Championship...and beat a Jayhawk team and texas tech etc..

and

If an SEC team (pick between UF LSU Georgia) romps through their league unscathed

and especially if

If Usc barely squeaks by bruins cardinal and beavers ducks etc...

then

it could be Big 12 - SEC in the battle royale, and hopefully this time OU doesn't shatter my heart..

obviously nothing is determined until the bitter end, but USC shouldnt get the coronation yet. big 12 and sec are right there

I disagree that USC is overrated. They pummled a team that has a lot of talent. With the weak PAC-10, they can go ahead and make reservations for the Championship game this year. I hate to say it, but they are the program of the decade. In the last 5 years, they have lost 8 games, all by a touchdown or less. That is insane. Everyone says they never play anyone, but just about every year they play a decent non-conf schedule. Pete Carrol always has them ready for the big game.
By the way... Congrats to Coach Stoops on win # 100! That is awesome!

USC gets beat by the lowly members of the PAC 10 more than the rest of the country combined. In the BCS era, they are undefeated against the SEC. In those 4 games, they outscored the mighty defenses of the SEC 167-38 (41.75 - 9.5 average). Every year, they play anyone, anywhere... Besides Crazy Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns, who was the last NON-CONFERENCE team to beat them? You'll have to look it up because no one remembers. Kansas State 27-20 WAAAAY back in 2002. Since that year, they have gone 80-8 with a 5-1 record in BCS bowls. The only thing keeping them unblemished in bowl games since then is an outstanding performance by Vince Young to win the game in the final seconds.

Head and shoulders above any other team in College Football.
Over rated? Hardly.

Vanndalizer, I'm a paranoid, always anxious USC fan and I both agree and disagree with your blog post. At this early point in the season I do agree USC may not "be in a league of their own" but not for the reasons you point out. For starters in regards to Ohio State they did have an established, veteran QB, but Boekman should not be the starter. Had sweatervest used Pryor I believe we would have seen a much better game (for USC haters and OSU fans). It's no secret USC always has troubles with the Vince Young model of QBs and would have that night.

In addition, there are no teams that can challenge USC this year on a personnel level, but SC could still lose a game this year. Shoddy special teams play, penalities, and a lack of flow at the tailback position still have me extremely concerned (on the other hand Sanchez is the best SC quarterback since Palmer if you ask me). USC can certainly beat themselves is what I'm getting at. Good blog post. Here's to a USC-Oklahoma national title game...

You never know when on an off week you will run into a Stanford or Pitt like 2007, but by no means is USC underrated. OSU has looked miserable all year so far - both the players and the coordinators look to be just going thru the motions.

That being said, you have to like the chances of USC and OU running the table.

My surprise is that if they falter the next most likely team would be Wisconsin or PSU.

I am not buying into an SEC team running the table. The Big East and ACC is runnign low on candidates before conference play starts.

...and despite what homers would like to think, the voters aren't goint to put a 1 loss conference champ in the game over an undefeated champ from the major 6 conferences any more than they will take a 2 loss team over a 1 los team.

I find it weird that people now say that we are in a class of our own...when pre-season only 1 sportscaster that I saw chose them to go to a National Title game!! Even though the pac-10 looks horrible this year.....every team in our conference wants to beat us & always gives us a run for our money!!

STANFORD- the d**m x-mas trees beat us last year keeping us from the title..........thats why i love college football, any team can win at any time!!!!!! I will admit that our conference seems to be pretty s***y this season.....& the Mountian West is LOVIN kicking our a**!! I also will concede that the SEC has the toughest schedule inside their conference!!!

all in all who cares if some sporstcaster says your in a class of your own or that you SUCK!!!! At the end of the day, as a long-time ~ born & raised fan.....we fasten our seatbelt, & hold on for the ride that is college football season!!!

I have to agree with Vanndalizer , however it's early and the season still has alot of surprises up it's sleeve. Look at the pencil salesman / football commenator lee corso, he can't predict an outcome of a game till he looks ahead at Stewart Mandel's picks, corso needs to stick to selling pencils and leave the picks to the one's that knows whats going on in the football world. corso needs to go back to sleep. It wont be long , what about 4 months, till OU plays USC .

Well Vanndalizer, USC just got beat by the beavers, just like I said, it's still early and with a sleeve full of surprise's out there, so I guess OU will be number # 1 now ??
