The Angels, who went 4-2 this week, reclaimed the top spot from Tampa Bay (4-3) in the W/L rankings and moved up in the other rankings. Philadelphia (5-1) moves up three places in the W/L rankings for the second week in a row and is now ranked similarly in all three systems. Houston (2-5) was the big loser for the week, dropping in all three ranking systems as they fell behind by four games in the wild card race. This week the W/L and Hybrid ranking agree on who the play-off teams should be in the AL ??? Anaheim, Boston (3-3), Chicago (3-4) and Tampa Bay ??? but the RS/RA system still has Toronto (3-3) ranked above the Rays. Toronto and Tampa Bay have almost identical run differentials, but the Rays have a ten game advantage in the standings. In the NL, there is unanimity on the division winners ??? Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles. However, the Brewers are favored by the W/L rankings, but the Mets are rated higher in the RS/RA and Hybrid rankings. The Brewers have a much lower run differential ??? by 40 runs ??? than the Mets. The three ranking systems are: W/L, which uses only wins and losses RS/RA, which uses runs scored and runs allowed Hybrid, which uses run differentials, except that each additional run counts half the previous one Each system accounts for schedule strength and has a home field advantage factor. the angels are doomed for another fiasco against boston. though they dominated the redsox during the regular season, those post season deamons are stirring and the two teams are on a collision course to meet right out of the gate. the angels have not been dominant at home so their battle to keep home field advantage throughout the playoffs is meaningless because boston will beat them in four.
