Michigan football's new 12th man: the Big House?

With the recent final approval of renovations to Michigan Stadium the University is saying the crowd might actually play a factor in the game. For years the "Big House" has been that in name only. The architecture of the stadium is just not conducive to great noise retention. This is evident even on television. With some great home games this season (Notre Dame, PSU, Minnesota, OSU) it would be great if the renovations could be effective and immediate, but alas, we will probably not see real results until at least 2010. You can see projected plans for the stadium at: www.umich.edu/stadium/project-descriptions/designs.html It sure doesn't look to me like the changes are as drastic as they would need to be to effectively enhance crowd noise. And that's a shame because I think it could really add a decent home field advantage if it were. Too many other competitors have this advantage to not REALLY take it into account when starting a $226 million renovation project. It's called the Big House for God's sake. Why not make that name really mean something?

The fans aren't conducive to producing a great amount of noise. The student section is fine but the rest of the stadium is occupied by 50+ year old alums sitting on their hands.
