Wow. What a week in the SEC. Some real surprises. But with one exception, I pretty much hit the nail on the head. For the season so far, I am 13 and 2 on my SEC picks.

First up - Ole Miss @ Florida. A shocker. But only a minor shock to me. I said in my picks that this game was not going to be like the Gators had against the Vols. I said that Snead might be the difference maker. However, I did under estimate the Rebels defense. But I have said in repeated postings on the message boards that Florida is a two player team. Take away Tebow's running and Harvin and they become an average team. They do not have a good offensive line and no real running game. That is exactly what Ole Miss did. But they also exposed the Gators on defense as not being as good as advertised. Repeatedly, Snead found wide open receivers. And mark this down - if Florida meets a team with a real strong O-line and a rushing game, they will get hammered.  I hate to use a wore out phrase, but Florida is/was overrated. But congrats to the Rebels for coming in with a great game plan and a lot of determination.

Arkansas @ Texas.  Much as I said it would be. As much I was hoping for a strong showing from the Hogs, there is just too much youth and too big of a mess in Arkansas. I am afraid I don't have a lot of optimism for the Hawgs.  Texas looked good - against the Hogs. I am still waiting to see how they look against an actual, living, breathing team before I buy into them being so highly ranked. Mack Brown's teams have had a history of looking good early then choking when it counts (with one year's exception).

Tennessee @ Auburn. Just as I said, these two dazed and confused teams lived up to billing. Both teams spent the entire game trying to give it to the other team. I can't say when I have ever seen two more inept offenses on the same field. Auburn and Tennessee MIGHT have good defenses, but it wouldn't take much of any kind of a defense to stop these two. Auburn's running game is just non-existant; with or without Burns at QB. And I don't know if the Vols have a 3rd string QB, but how much worse can he be?  If both teams don't get their offensive acts together - soon - it is going to be a long SEC campaign for them.

W. Kentucky @ Kentucky. As expected Kentucky took care of business. Sets up a nice matchup against Bama Saturday, as both teams bring undefeated records to the game.

UAB @ South Carolina.  Well not like clubbing baby seals after all. It seems that SC still has offensive woes as they should have beat helpless UAB by at least 30 points. I didn't get to watch this game, so I can't say a whole lot either way.

Mississippi State @ LSU. Ok, I was somewhat right about this one. LSU did win - as they were expected to. But they did it in somewhat ugly fashion. The fact that MSU's bad offense put 24 points, 175 passing yards (with no picks), and 110 rushing yards on them is not a good thing. However, it is to be said that two key D-lineman for LSU missed most of the game. But I am still not convinced that LSU's defense is all that it is hyped to be. In the past two weeks they have given up a lot to two very sorry offenses. LSU did show a consistent running game, but I am still not totally sold on Lee. While he made some good throws, he also had some bad ones. But he did play a whole game and get the win. And regardless of the their record, MSU is always a dangerous SEC opponent. And LSU took care of business and collected another SEC win.

Alabama @ Georgia. Ok, I have to say I told you so. I told you that Bama would dominate the line of scrimmage. I told you that JP's performance would be the real X-factor. I told  you that Geogia's defense was untested against a real running game. I told you that if you took away their running game, that their passing game would not be as effective without the play action.  I told you Moreno could not run between the tackles with power. I told you that Bama's DBs would be tough in man under coverage. However, what I did not predict is just how good Bama would look in this game. A dominate performance on both sides of the football, this game was truly over by the half.  Forget the token scoring by Georgia in the second half. When it started to look even halfway close, Bama rose to the occasion and slammed the door both offensively and defensively.

But the REAL difference in this game, and all of Bama's games so far, is the play of the offensive and defensive lines. Both continue to be just incredible. JP showed just how good of a QB he CAN be.  But none of that is possible with out the strong protection that the O-line has given him. Time and time again, the O-line easily picked up the blitzes and allowed Parker to find receivers sitting in Georgia's zone D. And the D-line totally eliminated Georgia's running game and forced Stafford to throw on the run almost the entire game. Stafford did make some nice  plays on the run, but no team can win consistently with their QB running for his life (look at Bama last year).

Do I think Georgia is a good team? Yes. But on this night, I think Bama could have beaten ANY team in the nation. Would a rematch in December in the title game end differently? Maybe in the score but not the outcome.  Unless Bama has some serious injury issues on the offensive line, they would still beat Georgia's defense. Georgia threw every thing but the kitchen sink at them and nothing seemed to work.

But all of that is just supposition at this point. Both teams still have a long road to travel to get to the Georgia Dome in December. And this is the SEC and as we have already seen, anything is possible week to week.

I just saw where the AP has moved Bama to number 2. That is all well and good, but at this juncture in the season it is totally meaningless. Sure, it gives us Bama fans the warm fuzzy, but going in to week 6 there is still a whole lot that can happen. IF Bama keeps taking care of business like it has so far, then it will all work out in the end. Not to mention, the other top 10 teams still have the meat of their schedules ahead. So arguing about who is number 1 at this point is just ridiculous.  I am content to let the others debate about that while Bama just continues to kick butt. But I will say that, here and now, there is not another team in the nation playing better football against stiffer competition.

For those who are interested, I will try to have my next weeks picks posted by Wednesday.

Mighty fine blog Bruce, really good stuff. This is fannation at its finest. This is exactly what I love about this site, a regular fan writing better articles than most of the SI staff. I do have one small suggestion for you though, do you think you could do one game from the Big 12 and Big Ten each week also? Or even the Big East if you feel like it but I'm ok without the ACC being included.

September 28, 2008  04:14 PM ET

Ok norka I will work on it. But I have to tell you that I try to only write about the teams that I really follow closely - to comment as an outsider just seems to lessen what I deem is my credibility.

But suggestion taken and I will try to examine some of those other games more closely. To my readers, I am open to suggestions as to which games you would like for me to take on.

BTW, thanks norka for the props. I am glad you enjoy the read.

September 28, 2008  07:22 PM ET

is this guy for real.he's got his head in his a??. and as far norka please the big 12 and big 10 aren't you guys tired of getting beat by acc and sec teams please. bruces1g bama will lose to lsu and will not win the title this year theyre good not great. your not as good and full of info as ur eggo thinks go gators and im not even a big fan of them go dawgs bama will fall and ill say i told you so

I forgot to mention that another requirement for posting here is some semblance of intelligence. Obviously nolenut has failed to reach that requirement.

A word for you bud: rehab. Get on the wagon. Put down the pipe. Gain some useful basic English language skills.

And I never knew my Eggo had many thoughts. I need to look more closely at my frozen waffles in the future.

September 28, 2008  07:43 PM ET

Also, last time I checked, my blog is not required reading on Fannation. So you won't really hurt my feelings if you choose not to torture yourself any longer.

And if you have opposing thoughts, by all means post them on your blog. Oh, wait. Sorry, I forgot that it would require intelligence and some basic writing skills. Damn, you are screwed.

IF you had read my very first posting, you would have learned that while I welcome differing view points and opinions, I do not suffer ignorant a**holes very well.

September 28, 2008  07:59 PM ET

nolenutless, I understand you feel slighted because of my blatant disregard for the ACC but be patient my dumb little socially challenged minion, the ACC has no where to go but up.

Bruce Bama did play a great half of football Saturday night. I will give them that. Notice I said a great HALF of football. They still are lacking the consistency I think to win the SEC this year. To go a whole quarter of football with zero yards isn't a sign of a championship team to me. I think you kind of slighted UGA with your blog, but that is ok as you are a Bama fan.

I will say this Bama does have an offensive line that I think some NFL teams would love to have. A running back riding on a rascal scooter could have broke off long runs in the holes they opened up. I will say this also though. You man in the middle Cody better shed some pounds if he expects to make it through the entire season. The second half of the game that I saw several plays where that true freshman center was handling him one on one. I wish we could have seen a Georgia team at full health against Bama though. Alas injuries happen so oh well.

Georgia also gave Bama a whole lot with stupid roughing the passer penalties, and Stafford thinking he has enough arm to throw into triple coverage and actually complete passes. Stafford though does have a NFL quality arm he just doesn't make NFL quality reads. There were times in the first half that if he would have made better reads the offense would have moved a lot better than it did. What happened happened though and Bama won a game that wasn't as easy as you try to make it sound. Remember they were outscored 31-10 in the second half which means Bama still needs to learn how to play 60 minutes of football. They are on the cusp of greatness though.

You keep dissing my Auburn D though. How many other defenses could play an entire half of football on defending their side of the 50 and only give up 7? That is impressive. The D scored a touchdown for the 2nd game in a row and 3rd time out of five games.

September 29, 2008  12:16 AM ET

Sorry bill I didn't think I dissed the Auburn D. They are good. In fact, they are the only thing that has kept AU from having two more losses. They would be even better if the offense did keep putting them in such terrible conditions. There is only so much any defense can do. And, if Tubby would quit trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, and get back to the power football that this team was designed for, this AU team would be in much better shape. But right now they do look dazed and confused, and I think that now they have to be having real confidence problems on offense.

Whoa ,do i smell smoke? I love it.

Bama played a really good first half. Of course I had to DVR it because I was at Tiger stadium watching the Tigers turning the ball over and throw an interception. If you really want to know why we didn't blow them out like last year there's a starting point. I think the guys were not playing their A game this week. If we don't get a hold on those pass coverages it could get ugly. Well we face our toughest opponent this coming weekend. Has anyone heard of, or does anyone have any information on this team called "Open Date"? I've searched through all of the sites and can't find any statistics on this team. I would imagine that their an Out of Conference team because I've never heard of them. Anyhow a little help if you know something. By the way, Charles Scot was averaging 131 yards per game before his 141 yds he put up against MSU. When are they going to consider him as a Heisman contender?

September 29, 2008  05:15 AM ET

Good question CenLa, but I think the same thing about Coffee from Bama and I want to break my own fingers for typing that, but its true. Whoever open date is they probably have a better offense than my Tigers. LOL.

I'm just hazing you Bruce. Bama played great this weekend dude. They need to give Cody some plays off so he is still fresh in the second half though if he wants to make it the entire season. When fatigue sets in thats when injuries happen. It wouldn't take much for someone to do what Auburn did to Glenn Dorsey last year. He wasn't the same after that game.

September 29, 2008  05:09 PM ET

Don't completely rule out Miami or FSU yet, who knows they may end with good seasons (although I think the best either could hope for would be 9-3) With the way FSU played against CU I think that if they could do the same against the U or even better I think they could go places...but we'll see.

September 29, 2008  05:10 PM ET

But then again thats speaking from a biased point of view.

September 29, 2008  05:29 PM ET

Bruce, where is my crow? WOW.....Impressive win by BAMA. I did not see that coming at all....and I don't think there was anyone that saw that going down the same way either. I think that UGA drank a little too much of their own Kool-Aid. That game was out of hand before UGA woke up. Looks like the power may be all in the West this year. Three great defenses at Auburn, Bama and LSU.

I am just glad that we have a good defense to go with our horrible offense. Franklin seems to be figuring out or Tubs is in his ear about running some offense from under the center. I don't know why these stupid *** spread coordinators can't figure out that some play action and some I-Formation still works. Any QB can run it (see Cox last year).

September 29, 2008  05:35 PM ET

I don't think that Burns could help the Auburn offense either. It has more to do with the type of offense than it does just not having a QB. Take Jason Campbell....he was going nowhere fast until they introduced some shotgun offense to go with the power running game. If they would add back some of the I-formation running game, with some of the play-action this offense would take off. We still have the RB's to play that offense and the receivers are good, too. Defenses in the SEC are too damn fast to get the spread to work by itself.

LOL I was just waiting to find out if you liked it medium or well done. ;)

I don't know if the AU fans realize yet but they may have a real fight on their hands in Nashville. Nothing flashy about Vandy's offense, but they have been playing some pretty good D. I think Auburn is going to have to have their act together.

Tell me, if Auburn lost to Vandy, on primetime, national TV, would the Tiger fans be headed to the plains with tar and feathers?

September 29, 2008  05:47 PM ET

I have had the tar warming up for the past few weeks. If this offense doesn't get going some how or some way we are in deep crap. I think our D can beat Vandy by themselves, but with us coming to town ranked in the top 15 and them having 2 weeks to get ready, we might have some real trouble on our hands.

September 29, 2008  05:52 PM ET

Maybe Petrino will get fired and decide to come back to be the O-Coordinator

September 29, 2008  05:54 PM ET

Heck Al Borges would be better off this year than last year.............at least he would have a QB that is capable of looking off a DB instead of what we have had to deal with for the last couple of years.
